(Maybe there was some suppressed homosexuality there?) ;-) Seriously though, in that song, I don't think "faggot" referred to gay people. It would be like someone in Australia calling someone a "dickhead". It can be taken positively as well as negatively. My best friend is fondly referred to as "DH" in correspondence. --- End quote --- I'm pretty sure it was referring to homosexuals, I mean look at the rest of those lines: "See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup Yeah buddy that's his own hair" The speaker is referring to glam metal performers, the whole hairspray, makeup and feminine style on men thing that was popular for a while in the 70s and 80s. I read somewhere that the song came from a conversation Knoppfler overheard in an appliance store, a couple of workers in the back referring to a music video that was playing on a TV. I don't think it's hard to imagine a couple of underpaid redneck boobs saying derogatory things about a wealthy rock star, it certainly wouldn't be the first time someone made fun of a guy for feminine traits/style/behavior. Especially back in the 70s-80s when homosexuality was far less accepted in society than it is today. Ultimately it's just a song, and doesn't really seem like that big of a deal. Too many people have become far too sensitive in recent years and take things far too personally. --- End quote --- So he was jealous but then capitalised on it by writing a song. Clever. |

Marc Hunter got fired for using the word when speaking to the audience. Marc Hunter was also a bit of a DH. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Hunter --- End quote --- True. I liked Marc Hunter's voice and Dragon's music. Today, Marc Hunter would not have gotten away with a certain act he did on stage once when he was blotto because of technology. Some US cops can't get away with shooting black people these days because Big Brother is watching them - via mobile phone cameras everywhere. There was the cigar smoking toxic waste dump named Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris, paedophiles Garry Glitter and Derek Longmuir (Bay City Rollers). In Australia, we had the incestuous paedophile Jack Perry (Zig from the Zig and Zag clown duo). We had the famed counsellor on radio 3AW in Melbourne named Reverend Dr. Alex Kenworthy who was reported for sexually molested some his female callers whom he would ask to come in "for further counselling"; his son Phillip Kenworthy was a serial rapist from the Surrey Hills area of Melbourne who was convicted on evidence from DNA some 20 years a later. It is possible these creeps were just the tip of the iceberg in the entertainment industry. I think with modern communications and technology, the likelihood of the perpetrators getting away with their crimes is much less than in decades gone by. So in that way, surveillance post 1984 can be a good thing. |
