Artificial Muscles & Rope like Linear Motors

in the 2004 science fiction movie I, Robot
we get to see muscle like actuators. a rope like linear motors
that provides torque pull when electrical energy is put across it.
part of the technological singularity.
any ideas on what spot the robot is useing. hydraulic actuators?
IMO
type of linear motor with hydraulic actuators that have both speed & torque.
type of hydraulic differential linear gearing.
be cool to see some open source muscle like actuators for robotics hobbyists.
