Aust 1194 talking clock finishing tomorrow night
« on: September 29, 2019, 10:46:09 am »
I wonder how many people will be dialling 1194 just before midnight tomorrow to hear the last throes of the talking clock (in Australia)?

Article about it here: http://www.orarc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/oxtales1905.pdf

Thanks Peter,

One day, when the Internet stops, we will wish for the good ol' days for the talking clock.

One reason why I am getting back into HF ham radio. Hackers cannot hack ham radio, except for the Russians with their woodpecker. When the Internet stops, I could charge $1000 per hour to step on my property, except money won't be of any use when you cannot buy anything. Oh, and I'll need solar and batteries as a back-up. All in good fun. :-+

Could the Internet stop? Look up the Carrington Event of 1859.

Yes, you’ll be dialing 1194 on your old bakelite with rotary dial.  :)

I forgot, and missed hearing it for the last time !!   |O
I reckon it would be a great "talking-piece" (excuse the pun!)
to have the device on a shelf in one's collection !....   8)
Diagonal of 1x1 square = Root-2. Ok.
Diagonal of 1x1x1 cube = Root-3 !!!  Beautiful !!

Apparently there were 4 of them:

another here:

So that leaves one more? Its a little less convenient to hear them now but they aren't gone.
