Aust. Post vs other Couriers for parts!! Arghh...

Aust. Post seem to charge SOO much, to deliver Interstate here now!!   
One supplier that I've used regularly, showed me a receipt for $72 to post me 4-KG's in a box!!
I've since looked at other courier services available for him, that generally brought that down to about $25,
but most of them think his source of origin 'town/city' is outside of their boundaries!!  He is in Horsham
Victoria, which is not a 'One-Horse' Town!  If he was at Ballarat, (bit closer to Melbourne) then there would
be NO problem. (I'm in a Major Town/City South of Perth).  Don't care how long it takes. Not after 'Express' 

I know there is a huge difference re: weights, but it amazes me how we often order parts/books etc from
some Asian locale', for say $5 to $20 and there is ZERO postage charge, to our door!!
I really DON'T know how they do it!, and it comes in 2 weeks, not months on a ship!

Yep, Aus Post are a joke now, prices go up and service goes down. Sent a 5kg package from Sydney to Melbourne recently for $30 and it took 10 days to get delivered.

I think the cheap shipping from China is due to the Government subsidising it.

For more than a century the rates for international postage has been set by the Universal Postal Union. China under the agreement is still classed as a developing country and hence receives favourable rates for their post.

There were good reasons when it was set up but it has some flaws now. Get your cheap Chinese stuff now before it changes.

Surely with their low low prices, excellent service at the counter because your time is important to them, quick delivery and reliable service, we nothing to complain about.

Now the reality:

They arguably cost me $300,000 because it took Aust Post one week to get an urgent registered letter from Wangaratta to Melbourne - a distance of 220km.
They lost $2,000 worth of rare academic books, and priceless memorabilia because they shipped the lot to Poland rather than the intended address in France.
The cost me $200 in added charges because they took 3 weeks to get a simple letter from Melbourne to Brisbane - with a premium $1.50 stamp.
It costs more to ship an A4 padded envelope item from Melbourne to Bendigo than it does from Melbourne to Perth.

They charge far too much for everything. It is cheaper and sometimes quicker to get products shipped from China than from the next suburb. They increased their postage costs whilst increasing the delivery time considerably. Meanwhile the CEO is the highest paid public servant in Australia and the highest paid CEO for any postal service in the entire world. Fahour got $5.6 million in 2016 alone. The politicians allow an exorbitant Aust Post salary to the CEO to attract top talent who in reality provide nothing to customers other than poor service and high charges. If anything, things have gotten a lot worse.

Cubic Volume to weight plays a factor with almost all options so weight in itself is not a good measure of cost. For one offs including depot to door https://www.e-go.com.au/home.do has worked out well for me including ex WA and SA recently into country Vic. Currently Australia post delivery times suck for reasons of COVID peak parcels but that is another matter. Generally I find them no better or worse internally than other freight options for time.

How many people with positive things would bother to review Australia Post  Online review sites are for the bitches and unsatisfied and only confirm their views.

That explains it.  You entered the realm of cubing - a freight charging system based on volume.  It is found all round the world with many carriers.

Yep... Most of the cheaper Couriers rely on 'standard' package sizes, as much as weight, and is
cheaper when using their 'standard' boxes etc. (For pre-purchase!). Though not much. About $1.20 ea on line...
