--- Quote from: John B on January 06, 2020, 09:14:10 pm ---In america, there's people called preppers. At least from what I've seen, they're usually portrayed in a kooky paranoid light. But in Australia if you live in a rural or semi rural area, I don't think it would be unreasonable to think along such lines.

--- End quote ---
Even in the Netherlands the government recommends to have a stock of non-perishable food & water to last a couple of days so the idea of being prepared isn't that crazy.

Sure, but preppers are the extreme version who build their own underground shelter with 2 years worth of supplies for the impending nuclear winter and with weapons to defend themselves in a zombie apocalypse...

If that was to happen and these guys were the only ones to remain you probably would be better gone  :-DD

So is completely normal, no debate, otherwise the thread will be closed?
I think it is good that we are not going to collapse and do not have a lot of political discussions here, but it is always difficult to remain silent on such issues. I fear that here in Europe we will increasingly feel climate change.

This has happened before, but even worse. On Black Saturday, there were 173 lives lost. The difference now and 10 years ago is there are  more people living in these bush fire prone areas. One reason is lack of affordability of housing in cities, so people move to where it is cheaper in rural areas. You can barely buy any house in Melbourne under $1 million now. The federal politicians are 100% to blame for housing being out to reach for many Australians, especially the young. Another reason is the Greens and their tree hugging stupidity that has caused people to lose homes, as we found in the Black Saturday bush fires.

As I said in another post, the government needs to fire rate homes before they are built in rural areas. 2000 homes have been lost. It is time for these pen pushers to get their act together.

People make some bizarre adjunct statements when they are driven by ideology, rather than research, evidence, and logical deduction. Things like "These are the worst fires for decades. Its because of human induced climate change.". They say these things with a straight face, and I think many of them have convinced themselves that those two sentences actually form a coherent argument.

The above should stand on its own, but supporting statements may be needed for the ideologues out there. The first statement indicates that fires of similar severity occurred a few decades ago, before the effects of industrial society were nearly as great as they are now. So, however much industrial activity may have changed things, the fires provide no supporting evidence for it. The only clear effect of human activity is the large scale damage to property resulting from the mismanagement of settlements in areas known by the people of Australia, for thousands of years, to be prone to this kind of devastation.
