Awesome Cheap Banana Replacement: Lab Trick
« on: April 05, 2022, 09:58:40 am »
Using a lot of banana pigtails in your lab ?
Ever been annoyed that they are expensive and/or a pain to solder ?

I found out a neat trick I want to share: use bullet connectors with the right diameter as crimpable dirt cheap female bananas !

Of course they are a bit short. It would be nice to have a custom longer version manufactured, but they still work very well, and mate perfectly.
Very convenient for connecting pigtails from PCBs to test equipment, and loose wires coming out of a sensor etc.... Crimping is fast, and they are essentially disposable.

Since discovering this trick, I basically adapt everything in the lab to bananas and i keep a set of pigtails handy for quick soldering to PCBs.

small wires : RS 624-1241
2.5mm2 : RS 688-1139
6mm2 unisolated : RS 795-6449

I would not recommend doing this unless it slid in all the way, its too easy to short out.
