Awesome tool for Linux/Windows dual booters.
« on: September 06, 2016, 10:44:03 pm »
Not sure how many people have found this, but EXT2FSD is a free tool/driver for Windows computers that allows 100% transparent reading of EXT2,3 and 4 partitions. It allows you to mount and read/write to them. You can even host Samba shares on them, so you no longer have to use NTFS as an in between for Linux and Windows. You can read your linux boot partitions, and it makes for an "That is what I have been missing all this time" feeling.

People have been iffy on it's reliability, so don't take the risks if you don't want to, but so far I haven't had any issues whatsoever with EXT2FSD.

Tad bit OT, but an amazing tool I have found.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

Thanks 2of5, first I've heard of an open source one for Windows.

I also think it's the first one that can write to a disk as well as read, and the first one to support transparent mounting.

Another tool of this type is Ext2 IFS For Windows http://www.fs-driver.org/
From the FAQ page "Complete reading and writing access to files and directories of volumes with the Ext2 or Ext3 file system"

Does the Ext2 driver access Ext4 volumes?

Unfortunately the Ext2 driver is not able to access Ext4 volumes at all.

-Quote from the FAQ page.

EXT2FSD can read and write to EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 partitions, so it will work with modern linux installs.
