Best Component Shopping in Asia?
« on: February 18, 2014, 04:27:29 pm »
I will be flying through Asia in June and I would like to make a stopover for a day in a place with a big electronics market. Akihabara in Tokyo looks awesome but I am considering other places. The ideal place would have genuine parts, lots of shops all in one place since I only have a day, and be open to Americans without a visa (Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc.) I'm looking for through-hole components, displays, LEDs, and other parts for hobbyist projects.

Where would you go if you only had one day?

I will probably avoid China if it is mostly fakes.

There are only two small shops where I live but when I visit every 2-3 months they always seem to have gotten something interesting in I would like to play with. I like doing stuff with microcontrollers and I'm planning on doing some projects that will need LCDs. I also want to build a single board computer someday. I imagine just about anything I would need could be found on the internet but I wanted to see and buy all the neat stuff in person since I have some vacation time and will be passing through anyway.

Does anyone know of anything in Seoul Korea?  I will be spending a week there fairly soon.

Guang Hua in Taipei is quite nice. Never bought semiconductors there, but I picked up some 10ga solid core copper wire for a bus bar for a project. Also got some FDB computer fans and some gray market Sennheiser headphones (sounded great, but broke after 10 months). Also picked up some large Rubycon electrolytics on a different trip (to this date I'm not sure if they're genuine, or convincing fakes, but they work fine).

They've got a little bit of everything. Keep in mind, most of the "competing" shops there are actually owned by the same person/group/company, with coordinated prices.
