It looks like the posties are on strike again, rumours are that one farted while doing his round , it was such an experience ,he had to return to the centre and they all walked out, seriously it was over a rep been suspended so massive walk out, funny how they manage to do this when it's a nice weekend. This is one of the good reasons the post office should be a private company, this wild cat striking would stop. and what about my 1mhz & 5mhz Xtals I'm waiting for the gits Rant over

what the?

Don't breath in solder fumes
what the?
I think that explains it!

Translation: Post office workers in Britain are on strike. Telequipment is not happy. He thinks they're overreacting and should keep working under whatever shitty conditions they are subjected to, so he can get his mail in time.
-
Too Right, shitty conditions I don't think so, under paid I don't think so, do a days work I don't think so privatise that's the answer.
-
Sounds like the Union strikes here in the States as well. They'll continue to bitch until they make hundreds per hour, free insurance, dont have to do shit and get solid gold toilet seats.

I was a postman for several years, until I became tired of losing money, because of militant workforce, and as a former postman I think they need taking in hand.

It must be a local thing - my post arrived ok this morning (South Cambridgeshire).

I was employed for 25 years by the (Oz) Government, the rest of the time in the Private sector.
I worked harder for the Govt than the Private Companies ever asked me to.
On one occasion with a Private employer,I got the TV transmitter site back on air in "jury-rigged" fashion, after a lightning strike, even though I wasn't the "on call" person---I was about 20minutes closer.
I was commended by my Boss,& given a small pay increase.
In the Govt job,it would have been "what took you so long?"
Efficiency? About the same, although one private job wasted a lot of time doing dumb stuff!

Don't feel too bad I have to go to the local ups store and pick up my own packages all of the time, they claim they can't find the address... odd that google earth can< I guess they don't have that yet.

We had a lot of fun with the mail here starting with the ZIP code reform. Originally we had several small independent towns which were incorporated by a small city over time. So we got the ZIP code of the city and added the town's name or an internal subZIP number to help the postman because every town had a main street and some more common street names. Then the ZIP code was changed from 4 to 5 digits and we were told to use just the new ZIP code and that we shouldn't append the town's name anymore. That was crazy, because nobody could figure out which town of 15 was meant by main street. The postman had to know all the names of the people living in all main streets and their house numbers to figure out where to deliver the mail. Because we couldn't get dedicated ZIP codes for each town to fix that problem we had to rename the streets. That again caused trouble for drivers with car navigation systems :-) Broken by design :-(

I hardly see a difference between the government run postal service and privately operated carriers. They all suck, just in different ways. UPS sticks out a bit by trying to to enhance their non-service with randomly invented fees, but the others have their tricks, too.
And yes, we had to send google maps images to some carriers, too. When minimum wages delivery guys are too lazy to drive up here they claim the address does not exist.

Funny enough I had one co worker whose postal address was his name and the following
Unnnumbered house
Unnamed street
Light pole xx
Amaoti.
The postie would deliver to his door. Never had a problem, as he knew all the people in the area, as he lived there. Later they got street numbers and names, so the electricity department could go to faults quicker. They also worked on pole numbers there.

I lived next door to a Canada post employee about ten years ago. The guy would be done about 11 or 12PM and head to the beach. He would still get a full days pay. The average salary for a CP carrier is almost $60k a year this doesn’t include a very lucrative benefit package.
I’m a firm believer that people should be paid a living wage but pay should also reflect the required skills to do the job. Technically all a carrier/sorter is a glorified paper boy. A more reasonable pay top out for such a job would be $17 -$18hr.

The civil service in Australia seems to be much better then Canada. I’ll give some examples. I go to pay duty on some items about 10 CSB officers sitting around shooting the shit not one knows how to collect the import duties. I call on behalf of my mother to get additional taxes taken off her pension cheques I was told to go to another federal department. The individual in barely understandable English said it was too hard for him to do it. I finally had to go to my MP to complain so they would actually take off the right amount. No wonder there are so many delinquent taxes it’s probably because they have a bunch of half-wits in charge of collecting them. I could write a small book.
I think the problem mainly stems from government positions requiring equal representation of race, gender etc.. The actual ability to do the job is somewhere at the bottom of requirements. Rarely can you actually talk to someone who speaks English.
Job postings have actually stated white males need not apply. PM Harper is supposed to do something about that.
end rant ::)
The Public Service used to be better here than it is now,& remember,we were Techs doing real jobs!
A Transmitter fault wouldn't wait till we had a cup of tea before fixing it--the viewers would probably lynch us if the Cricket was on!!
We never wore striped trousers like the bloke in "Yes Minister"---& I never saw a tea lady until I went back to the Private Sector!!
Even the old guys at the counters knew their stuff back then,so you weren't given the runaround.
On one occasion,we were selling our house, which we bought before we were married & the Settlement Agent got in a total mess because of some name differences.
We came down from the country, visited two State Government Departments & sorted the problem out then & there,in about 10 minutes at each place.
Of course, when the Governments updated how they did things, all these people who knew stuff got made redundant!
The Bosses of these places used to be Senior Public Servants, who were paid about 3 times what the average worker got.
Now,as they have to compete with the Private Sector, the Bosses get about 60 times more!
Ain't progress great!

Yes. Or they should do what the rest of us do when the working conditions are bad, find another job.

The best part of that,is the look of shock on the Boss's face when he realises some other firm wants your services!
They always think you should be grateful for whatever crap they throw at you.
