That’s not unusual though. I had a tax investigation in 2007 after following their advice  :palm:

To further add to the total balls-up that is BREXIT.

It's not as if people weren't warned.

It's the price of sovverinty, innit? - as long as someone else bears the cost, they are OK with it!  :D

Anyone bought anything from China in the last couple of weeks? I'm looking at a Micsig dp10007 that is £148, says postage free from Shenzhen, however it's not clear if I'm going to be hit for customs duty/ 20% VAT etc?

You'll most likely have to pay both VAT, some Duty and a handling charge (possibly two) for VAT/Duty.

My guess is something like : £29.60 VAT, £11.00 VAT handling charge, £11.00 duty and another £11 Duty handling/clearing charge - so perhaps another £63 payable locally.

Or buy it from Telonic in the UK for £174.00 (incl. VAT and delivery). :phew:

As the item is over £135 value the seller has no option/ability to charge you VAT at source I believe.

Yeah a lot of people don’t seem to notice Telonic. Turns out a lot more cost effective than risking purchase and warranty half way round the globe. Good company too.

Thanks I was trying to work out if Telonic would be cheaper once you added up all the extra charges. It's a safer bet.

Telonic's £145 (no VAT) is a few quid less than the £148 you've seen abroad. Either Telonic are making a vanishningly small margin, or the place you saw the £148 is quite expensive (perhaps the 'free' shipping is pricey for them).

Either way you'll be miles better off sourcing from the UK/Telonic - I've bought a few bits of Rigol/Micsig from them over the years, they've always been good.  At least they've dropped the "free firmware check value £25" bollox.

I just looked on Banggood, and its £99.88 there. So, there's a reasonable saving, if you don't mind the warranty risk.

Oh got some customs hell now. This is a fine example of a brexit bonus.

So I sold something on eBay. To someone in the UK. So this is a UK to UK delivery. But due to some stupid unibrowed morons at UPS they shipped it in a cage to Frankfurt. And now to route it back to the UK it needs to go through customs and of course there’s a fee on that and no customs declaration attached because it’s a UK domestic package! It’s gone basically.

Fortunately only £65 but it’s a shit show which certainly doesn’t do my reputation as a seller any good.

We use UPS for domestic and international- not had a problem since 1/1/2021.
Take it it’s impossible to get hold of a rep to sort out the mess..

Got hold of one but she doesn't understand the problem. I've written the delivery off. Will have to eat the cost I think. It's costing me more time being on the phone and dealing with it  >:(

Will have to try a respectable courier next time, like Hermes or Yodel  :-DD :-DD

Also been using Hermes for lower value items - 100% success rate so far. Bulk upload tools are pretty good. Might even give them ago for EU.

Yodel I won’t touch with a barge pole since their guy stole a monitor last summer (on CCTV!). Also got a great video of yodel chap sorting his parcels - throwing out the contents of his car boot onto our car park, sorting them, then throwing back in.

Yeah I was joking on Yodel  :-DD.

I send most small value items via Hermes and they have been quite reliable so far to be fair and there's a drop off shop over the road from me which is convenient.

Nope. London to Nottingham.
I guess it was handled by one of those Londoners who think anything north of Watford is a foreign country.

Sounds like some shipping routes went via EU hops in the past, even if they didn't need to technically - probably a hub and spoke network issue that will now have to be changed.

Just write it down as another benefit of freedom!  :D

That's stupid. It's the courier's fault. Brexit or no-Brexit. Go after them!

Oh completely. They said they’re still trying to deliver it but it hasn’t moved for a week. So I said I’d hit them with moneyclaim if it’s not returned to sender or delivered within 7 days.

The USPS must be a major contributor to climate change with their ludicrous routing of deliveries. Here's an example, this was a $10 part I ordered from the US. It went halfway across the US in the wrong direction before it made it over here:
