Buying 3M bumper feet
« on: January 19, 2022, 03:11:19 am »
I can't seem to buy these
https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b5005035205/
in single qties, like one blister pack of 56 feet.
They're either by packs of 18, or in bulk of 3000 pieces, or whatever.

https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/3m/SJ5412/2237332

On eBay the shipping is higher than the cost of the blister pack!

Nothing available local AFAICT.
I made the mistake of noticing the feet on my Commodore drives need replacing...  :-DD

So… get clear or black ones instead and call it a day?

Or the regular-adhesive SJ-5012? https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/3m/SJ-5012-WHITE/30800

Or third party substitute: https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/bumper-specialties-inc/BS01RWH05X10RP/9759784

Oooh thanks I didn't know they were called "bumpers", I kept searching for rubber feet.

Like any normal person!

I can only guess that they were originally named for use as non-foot applications, where “bumper” makes sense, like as door bumpers (to keep doorknobs from banging into a wall, damaging both).

I thought you were looking for an exact size, colour, style and brand. All the big home improvement chains seem to have generic clear bumper feet from their preferred hardware distributors.

If you prefer Scotch/3M I found this clear one:

https://www.homedepot.ca/product/scotch-self-stick-rubber-bumpers-sp950-na-clear-0-5-inch-1-27-cm-20-per-pack/1001124551

At a glance, the model number doesn't seem to match a 3M model number, so I can't be sure that it's actually made by 3M or if it's been outsourced.

I goofed there, I really thought "bumper" was like 3M's trademark or whatever, in any case they call them "Bumpons", not bumpers. Anyhow, I do need the exact size and color, inasmuch as replacing the feet on 35 year old disk drives is a "need"...  :-DD

I kept looking for "rubber feet", I won't tell you what I found on Aliexpress...

Anyhow, the next confusing thing is the color, what they call "white" and "true white" is a big difference. "True white" looks like game show host teeth, regular white looks like my walls.

Lesson here is don't look under your collection of 8 bit trash too closely!

And just for fun, I ordered the Bumper Specialties ones, while they are perfectly good bumper rubber feet bumpons, they are not the same shape.

I think it's time to back away from the computer and go outside maybe?  ;D

I have been buying the clear ones from Wal-Mart for years, they work well and have lasted a long time.
