Buying a DMM from Banggood
« on: November 04, 2020, 09:56:42 pm »
If I'm posting in the wrong section then please let me know.

I've got a hand held DMM but it's getting pretty old and a bit worn out now, bought it in the very early 90's so nearly 30 years old.
I've been looking around for a new DMM and just happen to see this one on Banggood https://uk.banggood.com/WH5000-Digital-Multimeter-5999-Counts-with-USB-Interface-Auto-Range-with-Backlight-Magnet-hang-AC-DC-Ammeter-Voltmeter-Ohm-p-1537097.html?rmmds=home-recommendation&cur_warehouse=CN.

I understand that it'll  be straight from china and as such I would like to hear from others to see what people's experiance is with such items from sites like Banggood.

Up till now I havent ordered anything of a sort because I'm not sure if it is decent quality or just plane old rubbish or possibly even down right dangerous.

Two years ago I received an item that was DOA and they promptly sent out a replacement. The replacement also turned out to be DOA and they refunded my money. I didn't have to send back any of the items.

I have heard anecdotal evidence that since then they have gotten a little more picky about handing out replacements and refunds, but overall I think you'll get better customer service from them compared to the random Aliexpress/Ebay vendor. They also charge more than the random Aliexpress/Ebay vendor.

Btw - for this particular meter there is a pretty comprehensive review at: https://lygte-info.dk/review/DMMWH5000A%20UK.html

USB sounds super bad, unless they properly isolated it.

I haven't had bad experiences with Aliexpress or Banggood, although I haven't purchased anything from them since March.

As for the meter itself, it seems just about right. However, I would not necessarily expect it to last for 30 years, given that the more recent wave of cheaper DMMs seem to be mechanically less robust. The major focus is the durability of the rotary switch, as several reports of ultra low-cost Aneng DMMs (AN8008/8009) are failing prematurely.

I see its competition being the Aneng AN870/Richmeters RM219 a tad lower in price. Although these have much slower capacitance.

USB sounds super bad, unless they properly isolated it.
Interesting how the lygte review did not even mention this.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

I find no hassles if you order the multimeter from the manufacturer's offical store.
It's the little ma and pa stores that also sell them, along with with clothing and kitchen stuff etc. - they tend to hustle defective goods, so I would avoid them.
Weihua Electronic Co., Ltd. links to Aliexpress Store 906863 but it seems dead. The WHDZ Official Store meh 94.8% aint so great and USD$37.46

It looks like an addition (pc board) to the multimeter possibly with IR LED on the top edge, for serial data to the USB converter/cable. The DM1106 IC just spits out serial data, I think sigrok can decode it. I can't see any other jacks/connectors.

Just noticed that the lygte review is for the "A" version - could be one that doesn't have USB.

Here is banggood's return policy:

https://www.banggood.com/Guarantees-and-Return-policy_hl103_at1168

Seems that the return process is more involved now. Have also heard that you may have to make a video of the problem.
