I guess this begs the question: Why is a piece of equipment designed to be used at night stored in a black case? Especially one that is potentially floating around the cockpit of an aircraft and would need to be located in the dark?

Common sense would suggest that the case in question would at least have some 'glow in the dark' markings on it or be made of a high-vis colour.

Yeah, I would assume for stealth or something, but just have a different one with glow in the dark when it won't be used in the field or something.

We had one of my squadron's A-6 Intruder aircraft burn rubber down the #4 waist catapult after liberty call at JAX in 1975 aboard the JFK. The aircraft went below the deck then up a little, the BN and pilot punched out and the plane pancaked into the sea. A cold-cat launch. The pilot forgot to release the brakes! Both the pilot and BN went into the water, but OK. The pilot flew a desk for awhile after that.

One of the findings of the first Gemini missions was that they found just how much stuff was floating in the capsule after it was launched. Took a long time to get the FOD down to zero, and even then they only solved it by making every switch have sleeved and insulated rear booties, so that the inadvertant wire slivers would not cause problems like initiating firing commands or causing shorts in the DC buses. A lot of planes if you fly inverted and are able to get to negative G or zero you find a lot of floating stuff coming out all over. Get that jammed in the control surface linkages and you are in a world of hurt.

They did find loose nuts, bolts, rivets, cigarette butts and Mercury dimes on Gus Grissom's Mercury capsule when they dredged it up from the bottom of the Atlantic.

The report said it was the responsibility of the pilot and co-pilot to remember to remove the goggles case, even though it wasn't on their checklist before takeoff.
Indeed. "Checklist-ism" can be blamed for a lot of stupidities... they encourage putting the brain on autopilot (no pun intended) and cruising through items on a list, without much thought to each one. But the absence of a "ensure all the controls move freely" item is a bit odd, or perhaps it's just common sense - -- the first thing I do when I get into my car is wiggle the wheel and give each pedal a push.
