Can i charge NOKIA 6600 with 5V?
« on: May 15, 2011, 03:51:15 pm »
Sorry for opening a new topic, but I need to know whether the Nokia 6600 can be charged with 5V.

On the charger for the mobile phone it says that it outputs 5.7V.

I can not try to charge it via the USB because i do not have corresponding NOKIA connector, and i can not find anywhere to by it.

I have uploaded the datasheet for Nokia 6600 and it be downloaded at this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?c1vhf6559q3qp5q
On the second page of the datasheet there is a big chip that the charging connector is conected to, but i don't known what chip is that and will it work (charge the battery) with 5V.

Can anyone help me with this?

Your best bet is to try it, should not do any harm as it is a lower voltage but you may have issues

5.7v is kinda odd, you sure it isn't 3.7V ?  I've seen a few old nokia chargers that output 3.7V @ 355mA
If it really is 5.7V the extra 0.7V maybe there because the wire in the cable is a bit thin and it ends up at around 5.0V when it gets to the phone.

It would probably be safe to put a linear power supply on it and slowly raise the voltage up from 2v and see when the nokia lcd says it's charging.

Note that some SMPSs get unhappy when you supply them with a too low voltage (increased duty cycle -> increased current). The good ones have an under voltage lockout to protect them in this case, but not all. One example is the first generation AVR Dragon. No idea about cellphones, but a voltage below specs is not necessarily safe.

Yes, it is definitely 5.7V. I have measured it and its 6.05V open circuit voltage and it drops down to about 5.7 when its under a load. It is the same with NOKIA 6630 charger. Here is the picture: http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu271/gmh81/ChargerORI/ChargerACP-12E_01.jpg

Well then i shouldn't try to charge it until i am 100%sure that it wont damage the chip. I am serching on the internet but i haven't find anything yet.

Go ahead and connect it, I've done it myself and had no problems at all.
You can find cables in ebay but charging trough the USB port of the PC will take forever (more than usual)... I recommend those kits with a mains AC adapter and a car adapter to 5V USB connector.

Well i will try, but i will have to buy a nokia charger and cut of the cable with connector in order to do that.

I know that this is an old topic but, here is the "Nokia 2-mm DC Charging Interface Specification". That should help.

I guess you could also try with 6v - grab a 12v line from your power supply and 2 resistors of the same value and you get 6v : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_divider

But as long as you're going there, you might as well get an adjustable linear regulator for a dollar or so and you achieve the same result.
