50/60Hz energy harvesting
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:27:51 pm »

I am playing around with trying to harvest tiny amounts of power from the 60Hz mains all around us. I pulled it off many years ago using a long piece of wire, a schottky diode and a low leakage cap in a configuration similar to the classic crystal radio receiver. After about 10 minutes of charging I was able to flash an LED for a fraction of a second. I'm having difficulty pulling it off again and I am not sure why. Could be because I am no longer sitting next to ridiculous amounts of 3 phase power? ;)

Has anyone pulled this off before and got any experience they can share?

I had heard that someone was promoting a gadget that would respond to radio waves (i.e. a "key finder") that was powered from power "harvested" from the ambience.
If it gives you any clue, I believe you will find the discussion over in the "List of Dodgy Crowd Source Funded Projects"

If you DID manage to make this work, it would only be able to harvest energy in places where artificial, man-made energy occurs.  i.e. not out in the wilderness unless directly underneath a high-voltage power mains route.  And it would "harvest" so little power that seems like it would severely limit how useful it is.
