« on: January 22, 2018, 05:57:58 am »
console manufacturer nintendo started the use of cardboard with electronics as a consumer product.
what do you think of this?  so if the cardboard is fortified with resin will add longevity.

This is a stroke of genius for those kids who like to do some making and know they will use it a few times then abandon it or hack it into something else.  It also demonstrates to this group that they could design/build/hack an entirely new or different gizmo using what they may already have - cardboard.  And since this group is a growing market I bet it will be a winner for Nintendo.

The video shows that it is a flexible low cost scheme and that many things are possible with low-cost electronics and punch-out cardboard so it can also be a high-margin winner.

It will fail miserably in the case of kids who want to just take it out of the box and use it long term (up to a year).  But those kids will buy one of these kits only once.

About thirty odd years ago to help supplement my regular income a mate got me a night shift job in a supermarket stacking shelves, the work was easy and the job paid really well but after a few days the skin on my arms was inflamed and extremely painful, turned out I was having an allergic reaction to the adhesives used in the cardboard boxes.

The store manager stated that he had occasionally seen this type of reaction from staff members before but was not aware of a cure or work around, anyway I couldn't continue so I had to pack it in and it was pretty much the only thing I was ever allergic to, parents of children using these products should be made aware just in case.

That might not be a problem nowadays. They might have changed the adhesive since then.

Yeah well, by the same token it could also be even more toxic nowadays than it ever was, mind you stacking the supermarket shelves required almost full time handling of the boxes which was not a normal or regular activity for me up until that experience.

as for the nintendo kit , personally I would be more concerned about radioactive contamination then toxic ink's or diy's.
depending on where in japan the cardboard came from.
