Career in electronics?
« on: March 03, 2014, 05:07:33 am »
So I am a 52 year old guy.  I have always been interested in electronics.  I went to college to get an EE degree but promptly flunked out.  Calculus killed me.  So instead I got a degree in Industrial Technology with an Electronics concentration.  From there I got interested in CAD and architecture.  I became an draftsman and then architect, then an architectural specifications writer.  Anyhow the economy had taken its toll on my and I am out of a job.  So I am thinking about getting back into electronics.  I have always tinkered with electronics and have a basement full of amps and test gear that I fool with as a hobby.  What do you guys recommend?

The classic way forwards in looking for a new career is to write two lists, one of what you are good at and one of what you enjoy, then choose a career that covers something that has made it to both lists.

You clearly enjoy electronics, but I've no idea if you're any good at it or what electronic industry is near you.

What did you do with it? Collect? Paint? Store? Hack? Experiment? Redesign? Upgrade?

So I am thinking about getting back into electronics.

Electronics what?

Sales? Management? Documentation? Translation? Repair? Design? Education? Blog?

Being good at it, and doing good at it can be entirely different things!
