Title: cartridge heater temperature ratings?
Post by: ftransform on March 15, 2013, 06:19:06 pm
I would like a cartridge heater which could go up to 400 degrees C. Ebay is littered with cheap cartridge heaters from hong-kong but none of them provide any kind of maximum temperature specification.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/Business-Industrial-/12576/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=cartridge+heater&_pgn=2&_skc=50&rt=nc (http://www.ebay.com/sch/Business-Industrial-/12576/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=cartridge+heater&_pgn=2&_skc=50&rt=nc)

Will these work?

I would like a solution that does not cost 20+ dollars a heater mainly.

Lol, I thought I could slide a bunch of those round metal can heatsinks I have lying around over one and use it as a home made hot air gun with an air compressor and an AL tube

Those cartridge heaters are not ideal for your application; in all honesty, you would be better to buy a hot-gun or a paint stripper !

I doubt it is sensible building your own but if you insist spare parts will work a lot better and come with a thermocouple for about the same price.

well regardless of my folly I still want to know what those things are rated for, just in case :-+

I just wanted to make a modular lab compressor system (pickup tool, venturi cooling pipe (EVEN THOUGH I HAVE DUSTOFF) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_tube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_tube)) (also doubles as smoke remover), solder pickup tool, hot air gun and solder paste dispenser.

 :-+

I know I can buy all this stuff cheap but it is more for fun then anything. I already own a proper hot air gun... it's just fun to misuse things you know? Plus customization, like foot pedal solder sucker or blower control is kind of neat.

The ones meant for plastic extrusion are normally rated to about 350C, as most extruders will operate at around 150-300C depending on the particular machine. The leads however are often only rated to 200C, as they are going to be outside the heater blocks and this is a cheaper insulation to make in a flexible form. Somw will operate to 600C, but then you will find the leads are made from ceramic beads threaded on the wires.
