Cheap Android phone recommendations please
« on: December 07, 2015, 03:44:59 am »
As the title says!

I'm not wanting to take out a contract, so will be paying for the handset upfront.  I've seen Huawei Y330s going for less than £40, has anyone any experience of this phone?

It seems that the number one budget no contract android phone is the
Moto G 2nd gen.

It was to expensive for me so I ended up getting a Blu phone studio mini LTE. These phones are under rated. In the box you get screen protectors, a protective case and ear phones. Performance does not disappoint.

Cubot phones are OK; I recently bought a Cubot H1, not their cheapest offering but seems to work fine.

Moto G is a great budget phone, check what you can grab on ebay, used phones can get pretty reasonable.

Blu also makes good phones, but i don't know about the UI/rom it runs.

If you're considering the Moto G, be aware that the 3rd (2015) generation is available.

I used the 1st gen Moto E for travel to Europe and it worked well without any apps installed. It did have issues with the speaker, but Motorola sent me a replacement phone.

The choices are likely dependent on your locale, particularly on the low end.

My main phone is a moto e, GSM/CDMA capable, good lte bands, fabulous battery life, built like a tank, takes sd card and most of all, one-hand operable. Terrible camera, on the other hand and not dual sim - at least the one I have.

All for less than 10 USD.

I have a Y330 as my "happy for it to get smashed to pieces" phone. Definitely not bad for the price but if you need a decent camera at all it's not the way to go. Stills aren't terrible but video needs an amazing amount of lighting to make them visible. Also (to the best of my knowledge) there's no way to unlock the bootloader and no one can be bothered to work it out so no custom firmware is available.

Got a Y530, it is the next "better" version of the Y330 if i remember correctly.
Barely works, would not recommend buying one.

The UI constantly crashes, the camera is fairly bad, seldom sharp and wants a bunch of light.
It more or less can only run one program at a time, when i have music running it terminates the prosess when i launch another program.
When i have a Skype call open it will terminate the call when i just want to set my alarm clock.

Great battery life though and reception, seems to be fairly sturdy.

I had the same problem with my Y330 to begin with. Can't remember how I sorted it but it was just an option in the settings to stop it doing that. It's meant to be a power saving feature lol.
