Cheap crimping terminals for prototyping
« on: May 17, 2020, 02:15:24 pm »
I've never used these before, but I think crimping can sometimes help avoid soldering which I'd prefer for just connecting wires to try something out.
E.g. I'm looking at connecting 3 wires of different gauges 2 pieces of 30 AWG signle-stranded wire-wounding wire and a multi-stranded piece of mains wire (not sure what gauge it is, but it's rated 15 amps I think).
This is just a temporary connection so I don't about long-term connection quality, corrosion etc, just something to replace soldering.
I'm searching on Aliexpress and have found these

I suppose this type of terminals should work for me, just need a different gauge, I don't need any screw terminals or connectors, just need to crimp several wires together.

Please share if you have experience with this type of crimp terminals if they are any good.

Ideally I would buy several different diameters to have handy when needed.

I also need a crimping tool for these, so please share which tool you're using to crimp these (will be ordering from Aliexpress or Ebay).

They are ok, work fine. Make sure you put some heat shrink over it.
I use this type of crimping tool for ferrules.

They are adjustable so you can set it to your wire gauge. When set properly they crimp really strongly.

I'd buy ferrules with a plastic jacket. No need to mess with heatshrink tubing. But you have to use ferrules with screw terminals. You can't use ferrules to connect wires together; they are unsafe for this purpose. For crimping wires together you need to use splices:

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
