If you lose your card and someone finds it they can use it but the damage will be limited to the per transaction and cumulative limits set on the account. This is the risk banks are willing to take for contactless payments trying to balance customer convenience and loss caused by lost and stolen cards. For amounts exceeding the contactless limit people have to enter their PINs which only they know.

The increase to 100 pounds per contactless transaction was imposed by the UK government. I understand why they would want to regulate a maximum, but I have no idea what they imposed this increased limit on everyone.

I'm sure you do have an idea why they increased the limit, you just don't agree with the logic?
