Claude Paillard makes his own triode vacuum tubes. Amazing!
« on: August 27, 2011, 11:58:43 am »
Greetings EEVBees:
--I searched the forum and could not find any sign of this being posted previously, I apologize if it was.

--Ham operator Claude Paillard (F90E) makes make his own lampes anciennes for his audiophile and ham equipment. This French gentleman is a truly amazing craftsman. He also built the vacuum pump and some of the other equipment you will see in the video.

--The tune being played is "The Man I Love" by George and Ira Gershwin, from the 1927 Broadway Musical, Strike Up the Band. I do not know who the piano player is, but would like to. When our cat had kittens we named the little tom cat Liberace because he was the pianist. Best Regards

It's amazing to watch this guy in action and what he does with a Swiss army knife!  I've watched this many times on YouTube.

I love the version of The Man I Love used in the video.   Thanks to Spotify, I listened to many (and I mean many!) versions and found several similar versions.  This piece really doesn't benefit from any efforts to jazz it up - simple is best.  My favorite piano version is by Eddie Heywood, similar but not exactly the same.

These all kind of blend together after a while, but similar versions are done by thse artists:

Ivar Anton Waagaard (this may be "the one")
Paolo Alderighi
Joel Hastings
Chuck Folds
Michael Pellera
Thelonius Monk
Oscar Peterson (Oscar Peterson plays the Gershwin Songbook)

Dear Jon:
--I have also listened to many of the recordings you named. I highly recommend the version by Jazz Great Art Tatum. Tatum as usual takes a highly idiosyncratic approach, but does not lose the spirit of the tune. Best Regards

Yes, Claude's work is amazing. I posted a link previously in this thread, but it didn't generate any comment. I suppose most people know about it already.
