Clear Lithium Grease
« on: July 14, 2021, 10:12:02 pm »
Can anyone recommend a good brand of lithium grease that is CLEAR?
I've been using white lithium on some servo gears and it's been turning black after some use in the field.
We've had some non-descript clear lithium grease in the shop that does not turn black.
It would be nice to have some clear stuff and keep our work looking nice.

Thanks!
Jeff

The only lithium grease I've ever seen is white. I'm not even sure it's possible to make a clear lithium grease.

I don't know about any clear lithium grease, but do know that the black in most gear train grease over time is actually particulate matter (wear particles and dust and dirt) that accumulates over time.  I have unused white lithium grease that is nearly five decades old and it has had very little color change over time.  Originally white is is now an dark ivory color.

Perhaps a filter or other means of keeping outside particles away from your gear train would help.

I've seen translucent red and blue lithium greases but never clear.  Synthetic grease would probably work as well or better; try Superlube https://www.amazon.com/Super-Lube-41160-Synthetic-Translucent/dp/B0083R1FME it comes in tubs, tubes and bulk.
The problem probably is dirt and wear particles from the gears that is turning your white grease dark and may happen with whatever grease you use.

Indeed clear sounds like it might be a synthetic PTFE lube.
