Title: Comparison or Test - Measure the resistance of your body...
Post by: Kiriakos-GR on September 01, 2010, 06:45:24 pm
Are you sensitive to static electricity ?

Do you feel that the telephone line voltage ( 40-60v ) cause an annoyance to your body ,
when you hold both wires " electricity passes from your body   ?

Well you can measure your body resistance and find how sensitive you are ...

Set your DMM at the 1M Ohm  , and wait about some seconds to some minutes , until the reading to stabilize.

For best results , seat on a chair , and place its hand over the knee of your legs. ( by holding the DMM leads as well ) ,  keep your knees at 20cm distance , and place your hands over the trouser ( Not naked skin.)

My results , 650 - 700K Ohm  ..

Post yours too , but do not take an fast measurement ... and confirm it with two DMM if possible.

Have fun , and report back.  ;)

ah but your DC resistance will be different from you AC resistance, I can feel 24VAC (50 Hz) but not 24VDC

FYI, biological resistance is a very dynamic thing and is highly dependent upon things like electrolytes (salts) and oils on the surface of your skin. Often you're not measuring the resistance of your body but the surface resistance of your skin. This is a similar effect to the resistance of an unclean PCB.

When we work with electricity next to us, the most important part its our fingers.

Testing the isolation that your fingers could naturally offer , it is an measurable proof,
of how conductive  you are .

My hands this days are very soft, in comparison with the old days , that my fingers was hard because was half burned from the continues hand soldering.

Generally I have the feeling , that I have good skin isolation at my fingers , if I was over sensitive , I would probably doing today , another job than electrician   ;)

This will vary a lot depending on (as TopherTheME mentioned) the minerals on your skin and the ambient humidity level. I will never forget the shocks I've gotten during the summer when I was coated with sweat - winter shocks don't even compare!
