Component help - for SMD Diode type
« on: June 28, 2026, 05:32:02 am »
I am a hobbyist with a little electronic knowledge, and have got an SMD diode that is burnt out as per the picture.
The diode marking is a white A (which matches a BAT14-098 Schottky diode) I did try asking this  on  a different forum, however it didn't return any real results.

As per the 2nd photo you can see that it is just mainly used for protecting the 5v throttle supply for an electronic scooter

I forgot to add.. what replacement diode could I replace this with please.  Obviously, I need to find out what caused the diode to burn but could be the fact its an incorrectly used diode in the first place since this board does not require 12GHz frequency requirements.

Note also: the other side (5v brake supply) also has a diode with same marking, however this also has a trace that goes to a DK9t marking 5pin component pin1

Hard to say without a schematic. I would try a smd 1n4148 for a start and see how it goes- I doubt very much that this is a critical component. As regards what caused the failure, it may not involve anything else: could have been an initially leaky diode that went on to fail and I have seen diodes on very rare occasions fail without any possible source of stress.

Any preference to SOD123 1n4148 and if you are aware of any common Marking codes.
I have sooo many donor boards from other pulled electronics gadgets and will most definitely have spare diodes sitting that I could swap out without any cost implications and see if they hold before I go and spend a few quid

Off hand I do not know the codes. I am currently working on my roof replacing a faulty lnb on my gogglebox satellite- when I get finished I will look for some codes, if you haven't found some yourself- they are easily found online.

Hi Paul
Great name of course haha
When you are able to that would be greatly appreciated thank you

P.s. hope you sorted the lnb for your gogglebox satellite whatever that is.. I mean I have heard of gogglebox on the tv but heard of gogglebox satellite

T4 is what comes up the most. "Gogglebox" is my derogatory term for tv and I was replacing my lnb.

https://markingcodes.com/search/c/a

I'd opt for a Schottky diode.

@fzabkar Any preference on marking code for a Schottky to put in its place.

Could you please explain your reasons for using a schottky instead of a fast switching?

Also that marking code site is good but doesn't list any SOD123 diodes with marking code "A", and i have checked other making ode sites

The attached seems to match exactly what is already in place.

The diode looks to be providing a reverse polarity protection function. As such, it would be operating at DC rather than some switching mode.
