Computer Chronicles show about the Internet in 1995
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:47:13 pm »
Interesting show named Computer Chronicles that talks about the "new" Internet technology. It also talks about how a live video multicast quickly clogs the available bandwidth - something we don't think when watch one of the almost 500 videos of a certain Aussie... :)

Check here.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Done when JC Dvorak was a Cranky Nerd, and had hair...........

Made when the Mullet was the in thing, and dead squirrels on heads was cool, along with ties.

I actually have a couple of these disks, I stopped using AOL because they were a rip off and impossible to cancel, that video totally reminded of it.

I got a free year of internet from a class action suit somebody filed, what a crappy internet service..... ;D you always got messages that said "this area of the internet hasn't been created yet"

never wore a tie or had a mullet though.

I know some people like retro computing but for me living through it once was enough. Things are better now, having said that a computers operational life seems to be doing much better (people can use their computers longer).

Having just turned off the old HP Pavilion laptop at work todaqy i can agree, this one came with Win98, and was upgraded to XP. Got to the point where it took an hour to click a window. Next stop is my office, a quick scrub of all the junk to gat either to a plain XP config or i will just put a new copy of XP on it, and then go to SP3 and leave it at that. Or install Puppy on it and make it like new again. I want to keep it as it has real serial and parallel ports on it, even if the drive is tiny.

Notice the 300 baud modem for connecting to bulletin boards on this early portable (along with the 5 inch screen).   One of these days I'll have to hook it to a phone line and see if any of the old phone numbers still work after thirty two years.

They do work here still, there are a lot of people for whom internet is dial up only, as they are way too far from the exchange for ADSL to work ( 80km plus) and where a cellular phone will not work. Some have actually gone to the expense of putting up a 30m mast and having a high gain YAGI aimed at the nearest cell tower on the top, then a low loss cable down to a hard wired GSM modem, just to get EDGE speed internet, but often it degrades to GPRS.

This one is way before the Internet when you had to dial directly into a server and could only access that server's bulletin board during your connection.

Lovely! Still got an old ZyXEL U-1496 running for my Fidonet node :-)
