Computer data storage systems - literature needed
« on: February 07, 2014, 06:31:27 pm »
I am writing a diploma thesis (or whatever it is called in english) on the subject of computer storage systems. This subject, obviously, has nothing to do with electronics (I was forced, due to circumstances, to take this subject).

I have wrote a lot on this subject (history of storage systems, history of storage media, types of storage media, RAID, IBM FlashSystem 720 and 820 (which is the specific storage system that I have to describe in detail) but I did not write anything about types of computer data storage systems. And what computer storage systems actualy are (like an introduction. I mean, I know what they are in general, but I don't know how to put it on writing), accept what I have wrote in the history section.

So, can you provide me with a literature that describes computer data storage systems in general, tell me what types of storage systems exist (DAS, NAS, SAN, CAS, COS...?)? Also, their application (servers,...?).

I'd spend a bit of time with Google, searching whitepapers from EMC, Hitachi, IBM etc. Plus a bit of Wikipedia.

It shouldn't be too hard finding good explanations and use cases for the most common storage architectures.

There are huge differences between the requirements for e.g. a clustered SQL Server and a hierarchical content management system.

  • Why shouldn't we question everything?
    • It's not really a Blog

Are you concentrating on data storage hardware only?
Or do you intend to also cover the history of file systems? ie the structure of information stored on the hardware.
Collecting old scopes, logic analyzers, and unfinished projects. http://everist.org

Mostly hardware. I will only mention types of file systems used and write a few pages on them.

What I need to know, for example, is whether DAS, NAS, SAN,... are considered to be types of storage systems or types of storage networking or just a configuration in wich a storage systems are used or what.
Also, are storage systems used only in servers or there are other applications in industry?
And, I could not find any literature in which storage systems are described in general (a couple of pages will do).

The thesis is almost finished (about 70-80%). All it is left is types of storage systems, application and some kind of introduction/abstract on storage systems in general.

Just tell me what are the types of computer data storage systems.

Like, types are:

- This
- This
- This
- And that

And that is it. I am not asking you to write anything for me or to explain all those types.

Also, where are they used in.

Like, they are used in:

- Servers
- This
- That

Can anyone tell me that?

If you're writing a thesis, you should know how to use Google...
