Could EEVBLOG host a chip market?
« on: October 14, 2022, 02:57:19 am »
As most of us know, many chips are is incredibly short supply. Some big manufacturers are ignoring SMEs and hobbyists and only selling to the big customers (eg: electric vehicle and smartphones makers). Brokers in China are buying up stocks of some chips as soon as they become available and reselling them at exorbitant prices. I have a client who was quoted $250 each for Microchip ATXmega128A microcontrollers which are otherwise unobtainable for another year.

I know we have a general electronics buy/sell/marketplace here, but much of that stuff is test equipment. I am wondering if there could be a marketplace specifically made for chips and MOSFETs etc that are hard to get during Chipageddon, where we can buy or sell excess stock at a fair price whilst keeping the greedy brokers out of it. The site could also old boards containing some hard-to-get chips for salvaging.

EEVBLOG could charge a nominal fee for every transaction, payable via Paypal.

For example, I have 100 Renesis CPU chips here still in tray vacuum packaging, that I want to sell for $2 each in one lot. The site could list in proforma: P/N, Description, Qty, New/Used, Price, Seller. If a buyer is interested, he gets further info such as shipping etc and after paying Paypal the cost to the buyer, and a 5% listing fee to EEVBLOG (in this case, $10), and the transaction proceeds. Receipt and payment of the goods is based upon trust, but maybe there can be some escrow process somewhere. I am sure there are other issues to consider if this were to work.

Yes we can use eBay, but that is not necessarily hitting the target audience, and besides it does not have a wanted to buy section on it.

Is this a harebrained idea that is all too hard, or does it have some merit?

It's a good idea, but as you say, it might indeed be a nightmare to maintain.

+1 for nightmare. I'd think it'd get run over by Chinese brokers if it took off at all.

Good idea in theory, but trying to actually do it successfully would require an insane level of time and infrastructure development.

There is not enough of audience on this forum to justify implementation of this idea.

Why is it always "You guys should do this, it would be so useful to me!", and never "Hey, I'm providing this service for free, maybe you wanna participate?"

Followed by, I'm not paying the markup for that existing service already provided, someone should do it cheaper, how hard can it be?

That would be my guess.
I think we toyed with a community classifieds type forum plugin many years ago and it didn't work.
