Title: could you please test if my esr repository is accessible from your country ?
Post by: kripton2035 on May 16, 2017, 06:56:53 pm
I have a repository ( link in my signature below) for years now.
I recently had an email from an eevblog user telling me he couldnt access my web site.
I checked some, and it seems my web site is accessible only from france ? that's weird  :--
I want to tell it to my hosting service, but would like to know from which country it is really blocked.

could any of you please clic the link below, and tell me if you get to the site or not, indicating your country of surfing ?

many thanks to those who will help.

I'm in Oregon, about 40 miles south of Beaverton. My local ISP fails to connect.

Testing with various USA VPN servers:

Seattle : fail
San Francisco : OK
Los Angeles : OK
Austin Texas : OK
Chicago : OK
Miami : OK
New York : fail

And just for fun:
Algeria : OK
Vietnam : OK

Maybe someone has a theory explaining all of this.

It's a shared free host. Blacklists are full of them. If you can't access it, try another DNS server.
Like: 8.8.8.8 or 208.67.222.222 instead of the ISP provided.

traceroute & ping are useful tools but the packet probes that they use are often blocked.

It works for me so I can't offer much diagnosis.

The first thing I'd check from a host which can't connect is whether the IP address lookup produces a sensible result - I get a CNAME for  perso153-g5.free.fr which resolves as 212.27.63.153

After that it might be worth using the "traceroute -T -p 80" (if you are able - requires root on a Linux box). The last few hops that I get are

......
 4  ge-4-3-6.edge5.London1.Level3.net (195.50.116.49)  15.773 ms  15.749 ms  16.749 ms
 5  ae-1-3108.edge4.Paris1.Level3.net (4.69.159.90)  23.348 ms  23.347 ms  23.389 ms
 6  213.242.111.210 (213.242.111.210)  23.783 ms  22.701 ms  22.728 ms
 7  * * *
 8  p11-9k-1-be1000.intf.routers.proxad.net (78.254.249.130)  23.349 ms  23.793 ms  23.630 ms
 9  * * *
10  perso153-g5.free.fr (212.27.63.153)  23.725 ms  23.138 ms  23.234 ms

If i do a "normal" traceroute it does not get past p11-9k-1-be1000.intf.routers.proxad.net, "traceroute -I" (which uses pings to do the traceroute) also works giving the same result as "traceroute -T -p 80"

We do have BGP at work, i did try to reach your server from several routers, it seems that there is an issue with reaching your server on the cogent uplink, all other uplinks do work. I'm in Switzerland, but it also dosn't work from cogent routers in other countries.

You can also test this from: http://www.cogentco.com/en/network/looking-glass (http://www.cogentco.com/en/network/looking-glass)

I did some more tests:
https://atlas.ripe.net/measurements/8753718/# (https://atlas.ripe.net/measurements/8753718/#)!probes

Your IP is not reachable from many Locations.

I get the same result as Grumpydoc, resolves to 212.27.63.153 but still can't see the site at work via Plusnet (which I think is BT as well), even using the alternate DNS suggested a few posts back...

Stick it on github or something similar. Personal websites hosted at some random provider are a PITA - both for us and for you.

Depends on the provider but, generally, yes.

I use my own servers for some stuff but have a business oriented ISP who give me a fixed IPV4 aaddress, in fact a /27 block as well as a /48 IPV6 block. I also have a virtual server account.

Rather amusingly, it works great from behind the "great firewall" in China, but fails from Hong Kong. That's some kind of achievement (but obviously as Urs42 mentioned, it just depends on peering arrangements).

How did you do that? That's like magic to me.

I have a VPN with a lot of servers in a lot of countries. I just connected to each of them after the other, and refreshed the web page. Some worked, some didn't.

I am not an expert, nor someone you should probably take advice from in general, but maybe something to do with the DNS host? Hold on, want to try something.

@kripton2035 you don't need a VPN to do that, there's a browser called TorBrowser with which you can tunnel the http requests to any country you want, here's a how to:

https://hacksagogo.wordpress.com/2014/11/24/como-acceder-a-paginas-web-de-otro-pais-desde-el-otro-pais/

(in spanish, use google translate)

DNS is fine. Something else is blocking any connection even through using the static IP.

My test included connecting to my Russia VPN, and pinging the domain. I got through.

I disconnected, used the IP given to connect to the website over my US connection, failed.

I pinged on my US connection, failed.

Not working from Ontario Canada.  I can't even get a tracert to the first hop, which is kinda strange.

traceroute to kripton2035.free.fr (212.27.63.153), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

It does resolve, so it's not a DNS issue.  I can also get to free.fr itself.

works fine from Slovakia - ISP is Orange.
might look like the ISP which is hosting that freehosting server is not advertiising the prefix to everywhere.. like advertising it to cheap uplinks only...
it's common to have several uplinks and you engineer the traffic by adjusting metrics for outbound and as path prepending for inbound, but not advertising at all to "expensive" uplinks is literally breaking up the internet.
but this case is rather strange... it's part of 212.27.32.0/19 behind AS12322 and if their peering info uploaded to whois database is correct then they don't receive the full BGP table from anyone (no accept ALL for any of the AS listed) and all peers are listed as "and not 0/0" so they don't accept default route from anyone either... that would mean they have path only to direct peers and AS-es announced by those direct peers, therefore explaining why it's reachable only from a handful of places in Europe and not from US.

I've tried two Spanish ISPs.

One of them reaches it correctly via AMS-IX (the European peering exchange in Amsterdam).

The other one doesn't seem to have a valid route. Which is odd, as this ISP is a customer of Cogent, and accoding to Hurricane Electric (bgp.he.net) free.fr is a customer of Cogent as well.

I would contact free.fr and ask them wether they have any issues with Cogent.

The traceroute and ping results don't mean anything because a lot of ISPs are filtering those ICMP types. From a DSL internet access I can only get the clone page. From a server in a datacenter I get both web pages. Checking the looking glass of my DSL provider for the BGP route I see 212.27.32.0/19 which includes both web servers. Based on that I'd check for any routing issues (outgoing) at 212.27.63.153. Or could there be any firewall filters blocking known dial-in pools (often used for MTAs) or something like that?
