The poor suction seems to be mostly the fault of the bad fan design. I wonder if it would work as advertised if someone 3D print a better fan onto it.

May be with the 500mA the USB port can give, it is enough to spin the motor but not enough to do the job.  Perhaps plugging it into a 1A USB charger outlet may give it a little more oomph.
