I used to smash tubes open with a hammer... but I was 8. This guy does it more delicately. And he understands the tube unlike 8 y.o. me. :-DD |

He's also got a teardown of a 6L6G and another one of a 12AX7 and a 12AU7. That's neat. EDIT: Mr. Carlson suggests using heat (e.g. run a bunch of electrons through a few loops of 14 AWG copper wire that you've wrapped around where you scored the tube) to crack a tube open. He says it works well. |

Yea, it's interesting to see some of the various types/qualities of construction, from different countries manufacturers. Particularly when it is often hidden/obscured by various 'getter' silvery colour or blackness!! Or originally in a Metal Can! I've often found that old Russian tubes were generally built much more robustly and durable! Interesting note... Some brands of Vacuum Tubes were still using 'older' manufacturing processes, in regards to types of or lack of variations of thoriated heaters etc, and different types/processes of 'getter' use. This generally resulted in a 'blackened' look from the outside. They often didn't want people to know they were still using antiquated processes, so they would spray paint the whole outer glass with Gold coloured Paint to mask it, before printing any writing on them. 8) |

Several RCA receiving-tube manuals are available as online PDFs. Different years had different line drawings showing tube construction, with captions denoting the different elements or steps in the assembly. |
