Crashed train saved by whale sculpture!
« on: November 02, 2020, 05:53:35 pm »
Yes, I know this isn't strictly electronics related, apart from maybe what went wrong with the control / safety systems or whatever, but I just felt the need to share this news story!

Whale sculpture catches crashed Dutch metro train

A train driver in the Netherlands has had a lucky escape thanks to a fortuitously placed art installation.

A metro train in Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam, crashed through a barrier at the end of the tracks shortly before midnight on Sunday.

But rather than plummeting 10m (32ft) into the water below, the train was left suspended dramatically in the air.

It ended up being delicately balanced on the large sculpture of a whale's tail at the De Akkers metro station.

I couldn't find any existing threads that could be massaged to fit - maybe we need a general purpose 'Sheer blind luck of the day' sticky thread. Dave, feel free to delete.

Yeah. That is something you don't see everyday. Needless to say the train driver has been extremely lucky.

First time I saw this article, I thought "Wow - that train driver was saved by a fluke"

They're getting worse!  :D

That must be one hell of a sculpture though - the train didn't even hit dead centre, it's right off to one side of the fluke. Ok, the first carriage was lacking the weight it's front bogey by the time it hit and was still attached to the second carriage, but the weight and impact must still have been considerable, it looks completely unreasonable that it held.

The driver was incredibly lucky to walk away from certain death, I bet he needed a bit of a sit down when he saw it afterwards.

Knowing Dutch they will update the sculpture and put a (possibly smaller) train wagon on top of it.

Not if it would cost any money.  ;D

It'll buff out.. I hope they fix any damage to the beautiful tail. If it were NYC they would leave any dings in the tail and charge you admission.
