'Cryptic' Countries Flags ??
« on: September 14, 2021, 12:48:42 pm »
Under the guise of 'general-chat'... (sorry!)...

I recently saw a video about the U.S. flag, having 50 stars for the 50 States, and the 13 Stripes, (7 red, 6 white),
as representing the 13 original Colonies!  Cool!!!   Here in Australia, we actually have 3 flags!  Most of Aust. consists
of 'States', but we also have a couple of 'Territories', which is depicted in the main star under the Union Jack.  We also
have a relatively recent and acknowledged Aboriginal flag, and a Northern Territory flag. This goes against some peoples
feelings of 'Unity' in our representation, but I won't go into the Politics as such...   :phew:

Here's a partial screen capture from a small area my brothers Northern Territory website, that I made for him many years ago,
where I explained the meaning & details of those flags.  (I want to 'modernize' his site, but he won't let me!!)...

As this Forum is so diverse across the Globe, I thought it might be interesting if people knew what their flags actually symbolize!!   :-+
Diagonal of 1x1 square = Root-2. Ok.
Diagonal of 1x1x1 cube = Root-3 !!!  Beautiful !!

The Spanish flag (🇪🇸) is quite curious from an engineering perspective as it was designed to by easily identified from long distances (initially it was just used by boats) and, therefore, it doesn’t have any meaning. For that purpose a contest was organized in 1785, being shown in the photo bellow the rest of the designs that were proposed here: https://images.app.goo.gl/qsQbyhDAaZbcberp8 . Nowadays, it is sometimes a controversial symbol, but that’s way less interesting than the reason why it was chosen.

Additionally, each of the autonomous communities (which are something similar to states in other countries) and cities have their own flags (3 flags don’t seem a lot compared to the huge amount of them that we have 😂). In the case of the one of the autonomous community were I’m from, the stars represent the Ursa Major (the symbol of Madrid is a bear and a strawberry tree):

And finally, as we belong to the EU, we have yet another flag (🇪🇺) which represents the unity of Europe (https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/symbols/flag_en).

I wouldn’t expect to find this topic in an electronics engineering forum (flags can sometimes lead to arguments about politics), but, as in the case of my country it is slightly related to marine engineering, I think it might be interesting to know if that also happens with the ones of other countries too

This is as good a time as any to link to this delightful lampooning of the US state flags. (FYI, most Americans are not familiar with the state flags. You know your own state’s and that’s it, other than perhaps California’s.)

Most Ohioans consider our "flag" a pennant.  It is the only state "flag" that is not rectangular.

Thanks for that!  As also mentioned by a couple of others here, I was not aware that there were so many 'variants', depending on the 'States' or
how some countries define their Regions!  To one other, I certainly was 'not' trying to make any of this Political in relation to flag complexities...
I just think it's interesting how many people 'know' what their flag represents. Not that 'you' are 'kids', but so many kids in todays world do not
seem to be educated in the same was as 'us'(?) older generations!, including numerous fields of Geography, History etc... (Maths! haha..)   :palm:

And for some reason I don't understand, the current batch of anti-lockdown protestors and I think some far right groups have been promoting the use of the Australian Red Ensign Flag.

Hmmm... I haven't looked it up yet, but isn't the RED background to signify the Navy ??   :phew:

You might like the 'fun with flags' series from within the 'big bang theory' tv show.

Also, Nepal's flag is pretty cool.
