Nice, well in time to pick up the wave of views from the news of the landing on the media.

I'm already doing pretty well in the Youtube search results  ;)

Anyone in Sydney want to go to either the Sydney Observatory or the Powerhouse Museum to watch it live?
The Canberra deep space network is in lockdown for the event and I can't get in  :(

When you say "Live" do you mean in realtime with your own eyes or an organised event? Sorry, I can't make it. It would be one hell of a an excuse for a holiday if I could though  :)

The PowerHouse museum will be streaming the NASA feed, and have other things happening.
I'll be there.

So if anyone is in Sydney, come and join me.

Link to very interesting JPL Simulation software. Can track simulate MSL entry and landing etc.

Hmm... I just ran my own simulation of the Sky Crane maneuver trying to land a rover on Mars -- and I have to say -- it's bad news.

Current bets are -
8:1  1:1  Perfect landing
5:1 -1:1  Problems with landing, but fixable, possibly not 100%
3:1 -1:1  Spare parts available
Do I hear any more bids?

Rover survives but ends up upside-down?

I'm such a dweeb...staying up for this...Oh well.

Yeah. I think odds are pretty good. Somehow I am always confident in NASA even with their screwups, all things considered.

If you heard them read off the data on the landing, lots of happy people in that room. The skycrane phase (and just about everything else) apparently worked perfectly.

What an achievement -- space exploration, it never grows old eh?

Congrats to all those unseen and unnamed systems engineers who toiled away behind the scenes for years so that the rover could find its way safely to the red planet's surface.

Three cheers for the *unsung* heros of the day!
