One pet 'peeve' of mine, (I live on YouTube haha...), is seeing obviously FAKE graphic ThumbNails next to Videos/lists, that depict
nothing of the like, in the actual videos!!!! (Usually referred to as 'ClickBait'). It's against YouTubes policies, and lately I always
report them!! If others are bothered too, then here's what to do!!......
On the righthand side just under the video, you will first see the 3 dots I've made green.

Click that. Then select 'Report'.

Then select "Spam or Misleading", then click on "Choose One". Select "Misleading Thumbnail" and then 'Next'.

Finally, there is a 'Time-Stamp' (video position) that may be irrelevant in this case!,
however you can also add some personal text about your complaint!

Finally, just click the 'Report' button.
People need to be more proactive in their complaints!! :-X :-\
P.S. YouTube ALSO bans ANY videos or comments from Anti-Vaxxers!! in any way shape or form!!

But if clickbait videos bring in revenue for YouTube, what incentive do they have to do anything about it? Google is bloody evil.

Not just Google and Youtube, everyone on the internet is doing everything that they can to "monetize" the internet. The internet as we we know it is about about finished, very soon the big companies will be buying up the small companies and when we get down to about two internet companies, they'll be force feeding us total crap and endless commercials; just like network television.
-
As YouTube does very well analyzing what video's you'd like to see... (as being "subscribed" to a channel to get notifications about new videos is merely a myth), clicking on spam sounds like an excellent way to get more spam. The bubble intensifies and YT still doesn't care.. they will play their ads and get paid.
So I'd rather move on. I almost never see any clickbait content so it doesn't wind me up.

Remember, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

Yeah, better off not reporting it and just clicking "don't recommend this channel" or similar instead.
That and keep a good subscription list and use that to look for videos if you don't want to rely on youtubes recommendations. No need for notifications.

The thing is, we each should be viewing the stuff that we *choose* to see...the stuff that we go find to watch. Instead of the stuff we are manipulated into watching, and wasting our time.

Sure, then don't use the recommendations/home page, and only use the subscriptions or search results.

OP seems surprised that the modern age which is measured in "popularity", has created a shill platform, replete with shill mechanisms.
Surely not? ;)

I highly recommend NOT reporting vids as Misleading Thumbnail unless they are seriously bad.
I used to do that a lot. Everything I saw with a misleading thumbnail i would report.
Mostly it was just fun videos where the image in the thumbnail was not actually in the video.
The problem with doing this is that YouTube do not remove videos for having a misleading thumbnail unless its something
actually dangerous or harmful like a thumbnail saying "Eating rice will cure your cancer"
YouTube keeps track of people who report things and if your report was legitimate or fake.
By reporting things which don't get taken down you get a high "fake reporter" count which has consequences if it gets high enough.
I started to notice that my comments on videos would very often disappear a few minutes after submitting them because the YouTube AI was distrustful of my comments. It got quite bad, but when I stopped reporting things it slowly faded away and now my comments almost never randomly dissappear.
So I recommend monitoring what you report and checking if it actually gets taken down. If they're not being taken down due to your report then stop reporting that sort of thing.
YouTube will email you if a video you report gets removed. (subject "We removed or restricted content that you reported")
There is also a link in that email to a page showing everything you have ever reported and if that video is still online or removed.
So you can easily check if your reporting is working or being ignored and making you seem like a "fake reporter".
About the only thing i report now is all the fake Elon Musk SpaceX bitcoin 2 for 1 scams on hijacked channels. And they all get removed after I report them. I'm not sure if they have a "good reporter" score that helps you in any way. but it probably would help get you out of a high 'fake reporter' score if you have one.

There's no point in wasting your time reporting the videos. Clickbait works and YT makes a lot of money with these videos, they will do nothing about it.
Istead, you should try the ad-on "Clickbait Remover for Youtube" for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/clickbait-remover-for-youtube or Chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/clickbait-remover-for-you/omoinegiohhgbikclijaniebjpkeopip

I’m glad you chose Occam’s razor answer. You’re right. Of course. GoogTube are one of the most corrupt companies in existence. Negative attention, positive attention, these schmucks don’t care as long as they take in their dirty money.
