Dave - Please Could You Comment On The Following..

Hi Dave

As some of the EEV Blog viewers have trouble understanding Australian slang I wonder if you could comment on the following BBC article?

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27805070

One thing they neglect to mention is the Tim Tam, having sampled these a few times I'm now arranging for a bulk supply. ^-^

That is alright, I had a nice bit of Oxo tonight, very similar to Marmite and Bovril. Had it as a snack on some Provita.

I think you can buy it in the USA, or i will have to post some, but not to Aus, as there it is verboten.

I don't know of a source of Vegemite in Germany but when I lived in the UK its equivalent (Marmite) was regarded as either a) nectar of the Gods or b) spawn of the Devil. Personally I tend to lean towards the spawn of the Devil view but I know that opinions differ.

As for the original reason for the thread my first introduction to Australian slang was the Crocodile Dundee movies with, later on, the odd episode of Crocodile Hunter with the late Steve Irwin (when it wasn't dubbed into German). I have no problems with the Australian accent and slang but my girlfriend who is from Romania sometimes struggles.

Half of those sayings i had never heard before (maybe i'm too young) but the rest of the article seems accurate. Shortening words is still very commonplace even amongst the middle-upper class.

I'm with TMM, but I'm only in my twenties. But yes: mozzie, thongs, prawn, barbie (as in bbq), g'day mate, referring to women as "birds" or "sheilas", etc is all very much still common.

Also: never quite understood the timtam hype. Sure, they taste nice and all, but I'd much rather have some european chocolate  ;)

Chris Gammell once found a list of aussie slang phrases and he didn't think they were real, so he tried to prove it by tricking up me and SWMBO, we scored not far off 100% naming and explaining them. I think he was a bit shocked  :o

My favourite is from Charlie Cox (who used to be MotoGP commentator). He said of a really unlucky rider "if he fell into a bucket of boobs he'd come up sucking his thumb".
