@Dave: Regarding twitter from 8 hours ago
« on: December 15, 2015, 06:37:52 pm »
Someone linked a video but Dave can't understand german, so I tried to make a little transcript, jsut for the fun of it :)

(hope you enjoy reading!)

bald guy: I have something for you. Usualy you get dumber while watching youtube instead of getting more intelligent. Can you generalize that?

guy in chair: yep.

bald guy: ok. I found a channel which - suprisingly - got me somehow interested.

chairguy: I am curious.

bald guy: I don't know if that hits some other peoples interests. It is somehow like the concept of Bob Ross (whoever that is), just turned around. You start with some artwork and start taking it to parts. And it isn't some painting of hills and happy trees and stuff like this, but is is an electronic device. and then comes "the Dave". Dave is from australia (not austria!) and starts to disassemble this device. It is something like...
*starts Daves channel opening clip*
So he is a little like...

chairguy: *loughs* very nice!

bald guy: So he is a little like... what can you call it.... distinct? Yeah, but he does it for many years now and has around a thousand videos on youtube, and they are about 10 to 50 minutes long, and most of the time he takes something apart. However, there are some videos where he explains you how to solder. And he explains it so that you understand it and dare yourself to do it properly after watching it.

chairguy: ok.

bald guy: And I found him at this video here where he tests the pebble [watch]

chairguy: yea I saw that too!

bald guy: There he goes like "I run around the mud like crazy with a pebble watch" and shows the whole time how he submerges it and is hitting it against rocks

chairguy: *loughs* just hit it into the mud!

bald guy: ellbow deep in the dirt. He... He is a funny aussie.          His usual videos are like this where he for example disassembles a gopro. And he also rates it like "this is a nice piece of electronics, good design, but they bodged a wire in here, that is crap". But you learn something while watching even though it is somehow funny, he does it as his full time job, I mean electronic design. He disassembles many things and get send strange stuff from his viewers, disassembles and rates it and shows it to the community, like he did at the gopro video. He searches for datasheets for this particulat part in this device and explains what it does, and I don't think it isn't bad at all!

*shows Yamaha DME32 Teardown*

Here he has some kind of audio mixer with million of 'rocks' (meaning ICs), explains how the signal goes through the device. Sometimes he has a broken one and tries to fix it, solders a new Power supply onto it and I pesonally find that somehow interesting.

chairguy: I am impressed of persons like this that can take a look at a circuit or a PCB and know what is going on there. That is near to magic for me! I mean I studied electronic engineering for a semester and we started with that and i realised very quickly that THAT is not my study path! Because that is .... that is so funky that is... I mean, I can look at a PSU and somehow can understand how it works, but if you can look at such a thing (the mixer) and understand how everything is wotking, even just in coarse,.... gosh!

bald guy: And I watched a teardown of a photocopier where he takes apart a complete photocopier into every single piece and... he has a real photocopier, a big one! ... and after that he has a huge pile of junk lieing around his lab and... yeah, some videos are mediocre, sometimes you notice he is just experimenting and working things out, but he also has usb microscopes where he can look into the devices to show how things works. Sometimes for example germans send him very strange devices like equipment from hospitals, he takes it apart, some duracell batteries drop out and he makes fun of it. So, I just wanted to say that if you are bored over the holidays, a thousand videos, there will be definitely something of interest for you.
It is Dave Jones from EEVBlog, I didn't take a look at the blog and the very big forums where people help him when he got stuck somewhere.
I found it very enjoyable and educational, what you don't find that often at youtube. And that is why I suggest you to take a look at it, especialy if you want to try stuff like this for yourself. At least it gave me some faith that buying a decent soldering iron and start tinkering with an arduino wouldn't be a bad idea. So, I can definitely recommend dave jones. By the way, he bought a solar system and spent 2000$ more to get a german inverter... crazy!

chairguy: yep.

bald guy: funny guy, worth watching.

This is the link to the YT vid, just for convenience:

What are these big headphones good for, is this a mandatory requirement for a proper Hipster outfit?  :palm:

For doing an interview over Skype or some other  conference system, where you want audio without feedback of the originator spoiling the audio. That way you can have each participant only sending their voice, and not a mangled delayed set of the voices of all the others as well. Also allows a little local loopback so you keep your voice level consistent, otherwise without sidetone and with headphones on you tend to shout after a while as the brain is getting no audio volume feedback.

If you are using a good mixing console this is done for you automatically, and the best ones do it for each participant in the system as well so all audio is as good as possible. Good audio there, though the bald presenter does need to turn down the high end a little or use a de-essing filter on the microphone as well.

They look a lot like Beyerdynamic DT770 series which is among a set of headsets 'close to' standard for studio recordings. Why you ask?
Because they reproduce and isolate audio extremely well. For instance, the producer can 'talk back' to the guests without it being caught on the recording.
For music recordings you typically don't want the click/metronome to be tracked by accident.

They are more a requirement for good production value, rather than part of an outfit.

Somebody needs to make an EEVblog - Bob Ross video "crossover".  :-DD

They need to get out more if the EEVblog channel is the first/only Youtube channel that doesn't "make them dumber". Yes, Dave is probably the most well-known Youtuber in this area, but he's hardly alone, and that's for electronic engineering alone! There are plenty of other good channels that both entertain and educate at the same time.
