Here in Denmark we have duty free up to 80dkr(around Au$ 15) and if we get over this then we pay around 30% in import tax and handle fee.
But then again here in Denmark we are paying 50-55% in income tax.

No Dave will not set the value lower to avoid the tax and i support Dave in this, even that i have to pay $A15 for the rules and then pay $A 31 in import tax and fee.

Currently he is saying he will post rulers inside normal letters, no need to fill out anything, just stick address label and maybe stamp and it's good to go. I doubt even the most strict customs will pick these up.

Don't forget the need to manufacture the rulers, package and send 2000+ letter. Then pay taxes on what's left (if any ).

dave gets roughly $4 out of every $10, then pays upwards of 30% tax on it... all in all he will get roughly $7000 in the bank.

Easy: Just start an interesting videoblog about electronics (and additionally doing a weekly electronics podcast),
and after more than four years you will be (or maybe not) at the same point as Dave: over 500 videos and
thousands of regular viewers. It helps if you are enthusiastic and know what you are talking about.

thousands of regular viewers. It helps if you are enthusiastic and know what you are talking about.

Don't forget the rulers magically jump into the envelopes.  The labels instantly appear right where they should be.  The postage sticks itself right where it belongs.  They all march down to the post office to be delivered and there will be no problems in delivery.  All envelopes will get to where they need to go in a timely manner.  None will get damaged in transit.  There will be no follow up needed as everything will go as planned.

Yuuup!, a real easy way to make a few bucks.

Obviously this isn't a major windfall at approximately $7000 and is the result of years hard work building an audience.  However If I were in Daves shoes it seems like 7k for stuffing a bunch of envelopes would be a decent way to monitize all my hard work. And I would think I would take it as positive feedback on all my hard work.

I guess I didn't factor in that shipping the rulers is probably going to cost ~$2-3 for international shipping. Plus ~$1 to manufacture. Plus whatever Posizble charges. Plus income taxes.

Costed it out today and the rate for stuffing the envelopes ( you supply the envelopes, inserts and the labels and stamps) is around $50 here per thousand. Will be a quick 2 day job per thousand for the one contract packager I know, he makes most of his business by being one of the few who will do loop stapling in small lots. The loops are bloody expensive, along with the special staplers that do with them. Works out to about $1 per flyer to do.

Fair to whom?  If you had signed up in time, the rulers were 2 for $10 which was the smallest quantity option.  So you think somebody should give you one at what it cost?  The rare and impossible to buy rulers?
