Hi all,Just an interesting snippet of info i thought i would share as may be relevent to the current ukraine issues,a few years ago i was chatting to an avionics expert from uk raf waddington in the pub,we got onto te subject on radar stealth technoligy,the balkans war came up,he said they were managing to defeat stealth by using old radar sets with old filtering,ie look at were there is no background clutter on the screen,sort of an inverted radar image,Ie look for a clear space on the display and theres your target,anyone else heard of this,he is a clever guy so dont think its b.s,what do you think?.hope i dont get a visit from the men in black for posting this as supposidly its classified info lol.

Only works with primary radar systems, where you turn off ground clutter removal, which simply removes all static returns. However most stealth aircraft will absorb a large portion of the incident energy, and typically you do not have much clutter, except at very low angles, and thus the shadow is going to be hard to detect, as there will be essentially no reflections returned, as the energy will be leaving the planet.
Yes you can detect a low flying aircraft because it will make a shadow at low angles, and when it is close by, so already well within range for it to have left a nice present, being aimed directly at this bright RF emission source, and probably only a half second away from impact.

The really fun observation is that most stealth aircraft are designed to defeat modern radars that tend to be up in the multi GHz region (For good angular resolution from a small antenna), but if you have the space then MUCH lower frequency systems are useable, and certainly there have been stealth aircraft that turned out to be quite detectable on low band radars that would not look out of place in WW!!.
IIRC one of the EU defence companies pulled this party trick at an air show a few years back, caused some red faces from the US contingent.
