Delayed Start in Nose Hair Trimmer
« on: December 06, 2021, 07:57:51 am »
Hello,

My nose trimmer starts several seconds after I switch it on.
What could be the reason for that?
I would be curious to disassemble it if need be.

Thickened or absent lubricant and friction.

When you get to my age, you find the battery ones no longer cut it.

Eventually you need to change brands such as from Wahl to Husqvarna.

Why? Your hair strengthened with years?

Petroleum based greases tend to get thicker with age, I don't know the exact mechanism but I suspect the lighter more volatile components gradually evaporate out. They also may collect dirt and wear products from whatever they are lubricating and that will make it thicker.

The battery in my trimmer is AA. I just spinned battery in its compartment a few times and the trimmer not only switches on instantly but works better. I noticed this with TV remotes as well and don't know why that happens.

Oxidation or other contamination on the battery terminals. You might improve things by smearing the ends of the battery with a light coating of dielectric grease.

Will wiping 800 grit sandpaper on battery ends and compartment's contacts work too?

That will clean it, although 800 grit is probably a bit more aggressive than you need. It won't stop it from oxidizing again though, that's what dielectric grease is for. In most cases it is not needed but this can be an issue in humid environments.

Dielectric grease is not so popular in my country. We have contact cleaning spray with oil and dry contact cleaning spray. Not sure of difference and whether these sprays can be a decent substitute for dielectric grease...

Also we have WD40 Specialist Contact Cleaner.
And Mr McKenic – Contact Cleaner (Fast Dry) with features:

- Cleans Precision Electronic Parts
- Degreases
- Removes Dirt & Flux
- Improves Electrical Conductivit- Fast Drying
- Safe On Most Surfaces
- CFC Free

Not sure whether it renews conductivity and further protects electronic contacts.

Dielectric grease is usually silicone grease. The same stuff is sold as silicone vacuum grease and as food-safe o-ring grease. It looks and feels a lot like clear silicone caulk except it never cures.

Although, some people do also tend to have their nose grow as they age. But that's a different problem.

For the ageing among us, I can see an advantage in a trimmer that provides a delay between myopically searching for the switch and sticking it up your nose.  :D
Best Regards, Chris

That's silicone based lubricant, it's a very thin liquid. The stuff you want comes in a tube that you squeeze it out of and has the consistency of toothpaste.

This will not be good enough for prevention of rust and oxidation on electronics? It doesn't mention protection against corrosion though...

I planned to wipe corroded battery compartments in electric screwdriver and TV remote with isopropyl alcohol and use that silicone spray for protection against rust and oxidation.
