Device class of Emporia Vue Gen 2?
« on: March 21, 2022, 05:47:15 pm »
The "new" Emporia Vue Gen 2 is a pretty compelling device for power monitoring. It has some 19 current transformer inputs, built-in power supply and runs on an ESP32 - so people have obviously reversed it and support is coming for ESPHome.

I had a look at the device, which is UL listed, and I found myself wondering which "Appliance Class" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appliance_classes it would fall into. It's not clear to me, as while the device contains a switch-mode power supply, that's clearly galvanically isolated from the mains, it also divides down the mains (up to 3 phases and the neutral) and connects that directly across the isolation boundary. There's no provision for protective earth connections on the device, it only takes the phases and the neutral.

Now, I don't know the precise topology, but I see a string of 4*499k resistors for each phase and the neutral on the hot side, so I'd guess the LV side ends up mains-referenced with a 500kOhm resistance. Presumably on the LV side the device is then doing differential measurement from each phase to the neutral.
