Title: Dick Smith catalogue from 83/84.
Post by: hamster_nz on October 18, 2022, 07:07:46 am
Just stumbled over this Dick Smith 1983/84 catalogue - thought others in AUS/NZ might find it interesting to see what hobbyists could get in 1984... Even a 6.5MHz scope! Wow!  :D

https://ia903107.us.archive.org/9/items/dick-smith-nz-enthusiasts-catalogue-1983-84_202106/Dick%20Smith%20NZ%20Enthusiasts%20Catalogue%201983-84.pdf

Interesting what things have changed price and what haven't, allowing for $1.00 in 1984 is about $3.80 today..

Never seen one of these catalogues before so it was interesting reading through it, thank you for posting it !
Nearest we had in the UK was I think the Maplins catalogue, it was also full of useful data, pinouts and references, long gone now though.

Seeing the pinouts in this catalogue did make me wonder if I am the only one who has them printed out and pinned to a board for reference, yeah you pull them up on a PC or phone these days but nothing beats thumbing through paper books and note books  :)

The 16kb memory upgrade to take it to 24kb! $149  (page 3)

Maybe this is what I need to get, something like this for my phone it's always saying out of memory.

My grandparents moved house around that time and I collected all the scrap metal he had collected from under his house and sold it - maybe got $75? Bought my first soldering iron and a bunch of stuff after staring at that catalog for many hours, went to the Bridge Road store in Melbourne.

I must have a look at my collection of catalogues (real dead tree stuff).  I have a few around that era ... Dick Smith, Tandy, Jaycar and Altronics, I think.  Not sure what else.

I also remember doing mail order to the USA for 7400 series TTL way back when...

My, how the world has changed.
