Dingo
« on: August 14, 2012, 06:23:26 am »
Was sent on a drive for work last week, through the Simpson Desert. Got out of my swag one morning to find this guy about 1.5 meters from me growling and baring his teeth. When I started growling and barking back he switched into playful puppy dog mode.

I was under the impression that these dogs were ferocious man eating beasts! LOL.

well...maybe you growled and barked better than him and you are his new alpha-male now ;)

all in all it is just an animal and won't risk anything that is not so easy. I don't know if they really would attack a grown and Healthy (hope so) adult. If you were injured or ill that may have been another story.
Interesting that the Dingo made contact with you. Most wild animals I know try to hide before you.

So you'll bring him home as a puppy? Would surely impress the postman :D

Don't feed them! Feeding dingos contributes quite a bit of trouble for park rangers when it comes to public safety.

Looks a little like Canis Africanus, which are pretty good dogs, and quite a loyal dog. My sister had one that was a rescue pup from the bottom of a brick quarry, and it was a very good dog, loyal, listened every so often and very protective. A perfect SortaDog.

Slightly off topic, and maybe personal so I don't necessarily expect an answer, but what strikes me is not the dingo itself but what kind of job requires you to drive through the Simpson Desert  :o ?

At a wild guess maintaining cellular masts and other communication equipment, along with TV and radio relays. Just because it is a desert does not mean no people living there and wanting either a cellphone or data link, or Tv and radio.

thanks for the answer, but frankly why so many people on this forum just can't help adding the kind of remark I highlighted in bold ? I mean, ok, I did not thought of communication equipment maintenance, but does it mean I need to be taught that people do live in deserts ? Since I started posting here, it just keeps happening and is really a PITA. First that Bored@Work guy (ok, he is in his own class, comparison is not nice to others), then Uncle Vernon playing fatty ego, now you taking that superiority tone... What's wrong people ?

OK, I'm backing off then. Sorry if I misunderstood your tone Sean.
I'll just go back to my cave and refrain from posting around here if I can, seems I am "reading"  too much into other people's email to fit the tone of the place. I guess maybe even Bored@Work is a nice guy who never insulted anyone in total impunity around here, and it's just me. (I know, that last part sounds stupid to have added, but sorry, I can't refrain this.).

Tramjoe, no need to apologise. I lived for years in an area with little to no rainfall, where the farmers joked that if it did not rain in a few years they might consider it would be getting close to being a drought. Lots of people there, and a lot of traffic through as well.

This forum is essentially self-moderating and "lead by example".
Yes, if you don't like someone's post or way they said something, the best thing to do is ignore them. But more importantly, continue to contribute and set an example of how you think people should act and talk. The forum is what you make of it!

Some people on here are s bit full of themselves and generally manage to let it out when it's needed. If people are being offensive in a direct way they get dealt with but ultimately as Dave says people are who they are and most round here don't suffer fools. It could be worse, I left another forum when moderators were giving wrong safety information and belittling me for trying to understand current good practice and safety regs.

Unfortunately this is not true. Dave just told me in PM that Bored@Work attitude is acceptable because he is also providing good content. Just look for his posts, they are _full_ of direct attacks and insults. Others than me are puzzled that he has not been banned. A couple of guys on the forum I had direct email contact with were furious after he directly insulted them. Pretending that this guy's attitude is ok and that I am the one reacting badly is just plain bad faith.

That double talk is the reason why I am deleting my account now. Best wishes.

Oh no! Two moderators have differing views on something! How can this be? The sky is falling.
Our fearless leader is not prepared to defend you from a few silly posts. Do you really expect him too?

About that dingo in the OP, it seems like it might be a little domesticated or perhaps really hungry. I remember going to Fraser Island twenty five years ago, the word was to stay out of the ocean because of the sharks and we careful going inland because of the dingos. We only saw a few dingos and they were running away.

It's a forum, if people don't add comment it becomes a monologue. You'll work it out.

Work out the common denominator in all those interactions and you'll have your answer to where any problem may exist? Have fun and stay away from sharp comments.  ;)

You left out some important stuff I tried to explain to you. Like me being generally quite tolerant of different people and their different attitudes and the way they express themselves. We don't live in a perfect world were we all speak the queens english, and respond exactly how you want people to respond. People express themselves in different ways, accepting that and not inflaming thing by trying to play net cop is generally the best approach.
And yes, those who contribute good technical material will generally buy themselves a bit more leniency then someone who does not.
Like I said, it's lead by example on here. You have the power to possibly change the way people talk on the forum by setting your own example.

I think that's a pretty fair way to run a worldwide community forum. You may not agree, which is fine, in which case you are free to leave and start your own forum, I'll even promote it for you.

Like I told you in the email, I cannot possibly look at all the posts on here, it's not possible, I (and the other mods, Simon & Geoff) can only go by any official reported posts. So any talk among yourselves privately about not liking so-and-so's attitude etc is pointless and means squat. If you see a post that is a direct attack on somebody (pretty much the only major rule here), then report it. We cannot do anything unless the post is reported.
Each reported post is treated on it's merit's. First offenders might get a warning and their post removed, repeat offenders will get banned.

Ah, now I remember. That little snitch was the guy who thought sorting his resistors by putting all 1, 10, 100, etc. resistors in drawer was a good idea. And then went ballistic when told this is error prone. Didn't know little snitch writes letters to the editor, but that seems to fit his character.
