Distinctive smell of packages from China

Alex Eisenhut:
I've smelled that a few times, something floral, almost like lychee. It was pleasant, but totally IMO out pf place. It would be like getting a lavender-scented scope probe, or patchouli phone...

When you said "slightly sweet", my thought was some sort of chlorocarbon solvent.

AntiProtonBoy:
Maybe it's the same stuff they use in mothballs? Fumigation chemicals perhaps?

I think that's it. I've noticed the smell from the thin cardboard stuff comes in.

Fabric articles exported from places like India are required to be fumigated to prevent the spread of insect pests. The smell is distinctive and lingers for years.
The only smell I have noticed from China articles is more of a plastic resin odor and I think it is related to the feedstocks used.
