they're identical to normal dimms, just physically shorter

Yep, exactly the same. I expect they just want you to spend lots more on regular size ones, that or they're just very stupid, which is possible too.

In some cases I've seen the smaller dimms using higher density chips that some motherboards don't like. I haven't seen it recently but I have seen it before.

I was in a shop today that had 2GB DDR3 DIMMS for $2.50 (clearance, just 2x). They looked lower in height than the ones I have and when I asked about it the shop told me they were for SFF (small form factor) PC's and wouldn't work in a normal MB that has standard sized DIMMS.  I am inclined to doubt it but since I don't actually have any experience with SFF PC's I wasn't sure.

Can someone confirm for me either way please?

At that price buy a couple and if they don't work turn them in to keyrings

No, only parallel. Thought I might use it with a Z80 SBC I am planning to build. I had the guts of a POS printer back in the early 80's I used on a Z80 board I had back then. It was only 32 column video so it was ideal for listings. And it was the only way I could do graphics.

I've always wanted to use one of these in my projects, instead of having the usual 16x2 LCD, just print all the data off with one of these!
