No!  It's not a BAD thing.  Some of the greatest engineers and scientists have (or had) the condition.  Some examples are: Nikola Tesla, Einstein, Hawkings, Feynman, etc.  I can go on.  It's no mental disorder.  We wouldn't be enjoying our high standard of living if it weren't for people with Asperger's.  I just thought that there should be a disproportionately high prevalence of Asperger's among EEs and engineers, in general.

I scored a 31, but I'm pretty sure it's because I value different things than most. As a bad example, the average person around here doesn't care about physics and I don't follow any sports at all, so the common ground's pretty limited. Another way to put it would be that my social awkwardness is by choice.


I know what you mean by 'popular condition'. I feel somewhat strongly about such things.

Incoming rant, fair warning . . .

A few years back the coffee crowd around here adopted Asperger's as their latest 'fashionable affliction'. I know at least two people who, "don't have full on Asperger's, but are definitely not neurotypical." Sadly, they're pretentious, highly social manipulators looking for some way to make the inside of their skull as praiseworthy as their fashion sense. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.

I have one friend who I suspect very strongly of having Asperger's, though he's never been diagnosed as he sees no real utility in the knowledge. The degree of effort he has to put in to everyday personal relations astounds me, and I don't think I could find the resolve to keep at it as he's chosen to. After seeing him struggle through a divorce and reenter the dating scene painfully and slowly it steams me up to see people treat a difficult condition as an affectation to put their babbling in the company of genius.

I'd guess that engineering fields in general have a higher incidence of Asperger's. It's a good fit for someone with poor people skills and astounding attention to detail.

Temple Grandin is an activist for Autisim, and would be a good introduction for anyone who doesn't know what it is.

funnily enough i was in the local pharmacy the other day to get some prilosec and pepcid ac, they were under lock and ket, the shopkeep said they were because people stole them and tried to return them at other branches of the same store, but the generic brands owned by the store weren't under lock and key, on a lower shelf and were the difference in price of $12 to $13 for the brand name, he didn't seem to have noticed it before,(i'd imagine that'd be one point on that quiz) but yeah better profit for the store, since you have to wait for them to come and ulock it and the automated machine annouces loudly that you need help in the antacid dept. so i'd imagine a lot of people just choose the store brand.

I guess what I was trying to say is I was truthfull about the agree / disagree on each question, but I sometimes fudged whether it was "strongly" or not.

But I see down at the bottom that aspect of it doesn't even matter since all the scoring really looks at is whether it's an agree or disagree. Severity doesn't come into play.

first of all, this test is far from scientific....it's just a tool to amuse ourselves.

secondly, why are you guys bummed that you have -- or might have -- Asperger's?  There's no such thing as "normal".  I think I scored high-ish on the test because I am an introvert.  Yup, that's right!  I'm not ashamed to be an introvert either; it just means that I recharge in solitude and feel drained after hanging around people for too long -- especially with intense, high-energy personalities in formal situations.  It doesn't mean that I'm antisocial or pissed off at the world.  I love hanging out with my friends, but I just can't do it for a long and continuous length of time.  Of course, I tend to be able to hang around other introverts much longer, as they require much less maintenance.

Just be yourself!

BTW, depression is a very common condition as well; it tends to afflict idealists, realists, pragmatists, etc.  Depression tends to be very common among actors, artists and comedians as well -- ironic, huh?  Examples include: Chevy Chase, Sarah Silverman, Owen Wilson, Drew Carey, Jim Carrey, Rodney Dangerfield, etc.  More examples: Ashley Judd, Billy Joel, Buzz Aldrin, etc.

I wouldn't call it a blessing, but it sure is far from a "disorder".  We need depressed people and ass burgers in this world.

Nop its not .... If you are an healthy personality  , depression comes ONLY from true negative events ,
that you are unable to have control or handle ..

They are many that they just think or believe  that they are depressed.

The only true reason to feel depression , its your credit card bill,
especially if you have lost your job.

Many of those answers could be pretty good diagnostics of whether the person is male or female to be honest! What did strike me was the number of answers which (taken in reverse) could be asked of a person suspected of being dyslexic or dyspraxic. I wonder if there is a lower preponderance of autism among dyslexics? In the context of this quiz they do appear to be polar opposites. The people I know which have dyslexia (like autism, they don't 'suffer' from dyslexia, it is just how they are) are all amazingly creative and sociable, but are utterly rubbish at remembering sequences.

Strangely, I can't remember phone numbers (I can remember 2 - home and my mobile - but only because I have a mnemonic for it) yet I don't have any problem with spelling. Equally, I love analysing mechanistic things and seeing how they work (or fail to), and hate my routine being messed with, but I am really good at understanding what people are feeling. I guess what it boils down to, is we are all a bit odd, a mixture of this and that, and defining human character is like nailing custard to a wall.

How can one tell that they're shy because they lack confidence, they're introverted or might have Aspergers?

I used to find meeting new people harder than I do now.
