are HDMI cable testers any good?
I have a PC VGA to HDMI converter box that is not working with a gamers HDMI DVR box.
this PC VGA to HDMI converter box works ok with any HDMI TV. but not with the HDMI DVR box in the video chain.
I would like to record HD live video off my PC's VGA output when online. im seeking 100% hardware solution here.
however the same DVR box with its HDMI video throughput works ok with the playstation.
so there is something not right with the PC VGA to HDMI converter box output!
no sound and no record, however this works ok with the playstation HDMI output be it games or movies.
find it difficult to unlock the HDMI puzzle. if it was DRM then the playstation 4 HD video output would not work.
but is does work. so what is going on inside them HDMI cables? if a HDMI link in the video chain is bad how do you find it?
without a lot of audiophile bs! about buying super $$$ cables.
the HDMI DVR box im useing, and the PC VGA to HDMI converter box.
both work individually, but not together. :-//

the VGA to hdmi thing would be an active converter, so there is no easy way to say exactly how they implemented it,
A starting point would be, try a standard TV resolution on VGA, its possible your recorder only supports a handful of resolutions, and lower frame rates.
Next question would be, are you sure your PC doesnt offer DVI or Displayport, DVI to HDMI is just a plug change for video, and an audio encoder only for both.

no displayport on this video card :palm: I'll get back to you, i have used standard video resolution. I was hoping someone had hacked this type converter for online gaming. maybe cracked the HDMI protocol? two more piks

Research "high definition content protection" (HDCP).

The PC VGA to HDMI might be outputting a 4:4:4 RGB DVI signal on a HDMI cable. This is allowed as a backwards compatible mode and usually has better color in 24bit applications. However, the PlayStation HDMI output might be a true HDMI Component 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 YUV video signal with embedded uncompressed audio inside the video signal as well as the separate Dolby AC3/AAC channel. Your DVR might have never been tested and designed to accept the old DVI RGB format which doesn't support embedded audio in the video channel.
Worse, your DVR might only record the dead on spec 25 HDTV standard video modes. Your converter might be off or optimize it's video output mode to match the VGA video mode coming in. This usually will not work with DVRs as their mpeg chipset is expecting only around 4-8 fixed video formats which time perfectly to the way it is programmed.
