Does hot water freeze faster than cold?

I had not heard of this before, it's called the Mpemba effect.

My theory is that the hot water will set up convection currents when chilled, causing mixing and preventing stratification. Could be tested experimentally by trying this in zero g, where convection is eliminated.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Get two equal glasses.
Fill one with boiling water, the other with colder tap water.
Put them in the freezer.
Time which one freezes first.
The question will be answered once and for all time.
