Fair pay for work done
« on: January 21, 2015, 12:23:53 pm »
Good evening all

I have a question that I am fairly certain has been asked before.

I am currently doing  some work on a project (not mine) that involves the full gamut of electronic design and construction.

For my part, I have designed the circuits, drawn the schematics for said circuits, designed, etched and built the circuit boards for the project. Most of the components for the boards have been supplied to me.

I have simply been asked to invoice for my time and any extras for compensation.

However,  being new at this level of the game, does anybody have an idea as to what hourly rate I should be able to invoice for?

Any words of advice would also be welcome.

Regards

Andrew

Agree all your terms, including charges and timescale for payment, before you start working.

Presumably you're doing this as a paid, professional service in the capacity of a contractor or consultant, right?

Who owns the IP you're creating? Are you expected to provide warranty service for your work? What responsibilities are you expected to bear once you've handed over your design work?

What's fair to you where you are  may not be fair to me where I am, and vice versa.

Without doing much work, I think you can simply ask yourself at what rate would someone entice to do this. And that would be a fair rate to you.

In Australia, ballpark, you'd usually charge $50-$100 an hour for that kind of stuff. Some charge a lot more, but more than that is usually for more specialised stuff.
Basically about double what you'd expect for an equivalent hourly wage if you were doing this as a full time job, so in this case, double the typical $50K-$100K/year range.
