Title: Eagle cad question
Post by: snipersquad100 on December 16, 2014, 01:30:19 pm
HI, Does anyone know how to put an image on a pcb on eagle cad, I'm using free mode at the moment but am upgrading to hobbyist level soon.

There's a .ulp script to convert the bitmap to a series of lines on the silkscreen.  It's terrible, but it works.

In the board editor:  File > Run ULP... > import_bmp.ulp

read the text carefully.

It has to be an 8-bit (256 color) windows .BMP file format image.

256 colour 8-bit WTF? This isn't the 80s.  ::) I've not used Eagle for awhile. because it blows but I don't want to start a discussion about which CAD package is better.  ;D

This is probably a silly question: does Eagle allow you to import any vector formats? There are much better tools for converting BMP, PNG, GIF etc. to a vector format such as EMF or SGV.

Nope, just BMP.

Bit annoying, I had a set called "Eagle Power Tools" or something for an old version 5.x can't remember what that imported / exported.

Natively, I daresay you can get ULPs that will import DXF or some other formats perhaps?

I use this resource for importing vectors into Eagle: http://todbot.com/blog/2011/06/06/from-illustrator-to-eagle-vector-graphics-in-circuits/ (http://todbot.com/blog/2011/06/06/from-illustrator-to-eagle-vector-graphics-in-circuits/)

It works quite well. I've modified the ULP over time to fit my needs, but in its base form, it's very usable. If you're importing to a silk layer, just be sure to select "polygon" and not "wire".

This is Eagle you're talking about. For my sins, Eagle's what I've used as my only schematic capture and PCB layout package for too many years. The UI is from a decades old other generation, that's for sure. Problem is, once you've invested so much into such a product, in terms of cold hard cash as well as learning it and developing your own component libraries, you're unlikely to want to move.

Yes, the UI is probably the best definition of "ass-backwards" I've seen. But like you, I still use it. I am sure that these days there are far better solutions, but the primary reason I chose it way back when was its pre-existing extensive parts library. I don't know how other tools stack up now.

Oops.  :palm:
